I want Kessel to beat the Czechs tomorrow. They have Krejci (fuck Boston), Gudas (TBL), Plekanec (MTL) etc. etc.
When the US plays Canada, it's guys like Bergeron (fuck Boston) and Crosby and St. Louis who Toronto will need to go through. Kessel having a major win over those players is not a small thing when they face each other again in the playoffs.

Also - I only have a 70-80 year window to see the Leafs win (if I'm so lucky). I've already seen Canada win twice. ANY small edge I can get on the Leafs improving their chances, I will take.
Like Anton said, I'll trade multiple future Gold Medals for 1 Leafs Stanley Cup

Happy to see the Swedes win and if the Russians win, I'm hoping to see more from Datsyuk like what we saw against Team USA. With Zetterberg's injury, he's going to be extra important for the Wings they get back. Even though the Slovaks got bounced and didn't win a game, I liked what I saw from Tatar and Jurco. You kinda know what to expect from the other Wings vets in this tournament. From a Wings perspective, it's about getting guys back in the lineup over the break...probably lose Zetterberg but Weiss should be ready to get when they resume. Howard not playing isn't a bad thing since he's been dinged up.

Don't care. Canada all the way.
I hope the americans/phil/jvr don't collapse like the leafs did, don't need that being a 'thing', i'd rather the canadian simple out-class the yankees, keep the game in the middle of the ice where our centers show their gap to the rest of the world.
Oh, and Weber puts a puck through the net.

This.
Shiv and Kareem: I feel like you guys are setting it up so that IF the Americans beat Team Canada on Friday..you guys will play it off like you were never cheering for Team Canada and that you always wanted Phil, JVR and the Americans to win the gold anyways. I still don't see how JVR and Kessel winning gold as part of a 25 man roster would somehow help the Leafs be better against the Penguins, Bruins or Tampa in the NHL. Major reach imo. I mean I could argue that if Kessel and JVR win gold in Sochi, they will be on cruise control and be super complacent the rest of the year after achieving such a huge hockey achievement this year already.
I get that you guys are Leaf fans. So am I. But this isn't Team Canada vs. the Toronto Maple Leafs. This is Canada hockey vs. American hockey. The US losing on Friday will not make Kessel or JVR worse hockey players. And likewise, them winning will not make them better hockey players. You might have a better argument if this was Tennis where it's a 1 on 1 sport but hockey isn't one of them.

I repeat, I feel this way about Kessel/JVR ONLY IF Canada loses tomorrow. But I would be completely fine with the Americans winning Friday. It really isn't life and death for me.bma wroteCOLONI feel like you guys are setting it up so that IF the Americans beat Team Canada on Friday..you guys will play it off like you were never cheering for Team Canada and that you always wanted Phil, JVR and the Americans to win the gold anyways.
I think you're underestimating the impact of a run like this on Kessel and JVR. Winning gold isn't a small thing. Winning an olympic semi-final vs Canada and the olympic final isn't a small thing. Now, here is where I will agree with you: if Kessel and JVR are back benchers on that journey, it likely won't help them a lot. But that's not the case...Kessel leads the competition in points and goals. He likely will win tournament MVP. And if that is what what happens, I think you are underestimating the power of positive reinforcement in sports.bma wroteCOLONI still don't see how JVR and Kessel winning gold as part of a 25 man roster would somehow help the Leafs be better against the Penguins, Bruins or Tampa in the NHL. No one is saying that the US winning = Stanley Cups for the Leafs. But it will certainly help us to have JVR and Kessel have that experience in being key guys on a team that wins key games. I would liken the experience = to winning 2 rounds in the Stanley Cup playoffs in the past.
Re: What's Your Opinion: Canada vs Kessel/JVR in the Olympic
Lou won Gold and then had a terrible showing in that playoffs VS CHI. Winning Olympics only further extends a winning pedigree, it doesn't create one.
This thread is all kinds of embarrassing. Let's see some fucking patriotism! Canada or bust. There is no silver lining to a Canada loss, silver linings are just having a positive outlook on a loss. However, at the end of the day, a loss is a loss.
Note: Lupul, Bernier and Phaneuf shouldn't even be in the conversation for team Canada snubs as long as there are players the caliber of Giroux, Seabrook and Crawford (I think bernier is better but less proven) are left off the team. Both will be welcome additions for the World Championships but aren't close to snubs for team Canada.

This is a really one sided example.shooker wroteCOLONLou won Gold and then had a terrible showing in that playoffs VS CHI. Winning Olympics only further extends a winning pedigree, it doesn't create one.
SJS went to the WCF. CHI won the Cup. Me saying them winning Olympic Gold caused either is just as ridiculous as what you said.
No one is saying this will create a winning pedigree. We are saying it will give them more to build on. And I am only for it IF Canada loses.
Why is it wrong to root for what would be best for the Leafs if Canada is out?
Re: What's Your Opinion: Canada vs Kessel/JVR in the Olympic
Not sure how you can be a "big" Team Canada supporter and then all of a sudden be rooting for USA hockey because you believe Hockey Canada should've considered 3 players that wern't considered.MSP4LYFE wroteCOLONI'm usually a big Team Canada supporter, but after leaving Lupul off the summer try-outs, and snubbing Phaneuf and Bernier they can go fuck themselves for all I care. What boggles my mind is how you are still a leaf fan then..because they always make the right personnel moves?
Re: What's Your Opinion: Canada vs Kessel/JVR in the Olympic
Shiv, I think you are trying to make something that is rightfully subjective into something objective. You are making it seem like USA winning gold or beating Canada will help Kessel and JVR become better players for the Leafs like its a foregone conclusion. There are so many random, subjective factors that come into play that makes it basically impossible for there to be any correlation, let alone any causation to what you are saying.

To be fair to Kareem, wasn't he born in SA? Which would make Canada his 2nd homeland. Can't really blame him for not being 100% behind Canada if that is the case.
I can however blame him for his blue blinders. Dion... Lupul... Really?

Me saying it didn't help Lou is equally subjective to Shiv's assumption that a USA gold would help either or both of Kessel and JVR. It's grasping at straws to find what I think shiv feels is an inevitable silver lining to a Canada loss. Have some faith brother.

If the US wins on Friday, I will be cheering them on for Gold on Sunday. If Canada wins, this is all moot haha
Re: What's Your Opinion: Canada vs Kessel/JVR in the Olympic
That's like saying "I want Sweden to beat Finland because I'd prefer Sweden to win if Canada doesn't" when Fin should be an easier matchup for Canada and the team one should cheer for.
To give you our point of view Shiv, would be so optimistically viewing the success of another NHL team if they were about to play your Maple Leafs? I feel the answer would be no.
I haven't signed on for a week and is why I am discussing this now, even if it is old news for others. Kind of disappointed this thread even exists.

It's different man. I could never cheer for the Habs. But I have a rooting interest with the US with two of the Leafs' building blocks on there. Why not root for my team's players if Canada is out?shooker wroteCOLONThat's like saying "I want Sweden to beat Finland because I'd prefer Sweden to win if Canada doesn't" when Fin should be an easier matchup for Canada and the team one should cheer for.
