So Versteeg for Stafford for Shook. Richards for Colborne + Engelland for Nick.

While Cliff hits a nice home run due to salary cap.

it was Stafford + Larose for versteeg (don't hate or love that swap). I regretted that last trade as soon as I made the Datsyuk + Krejci trades. Too many C's had to move Richards for cap but am now set.

Over the last 2 months I've realized just how far Mike Richards value has fallen in this league.

It's amazing because when Shook makes his original deal with Nick, his team is the runaway winner in the deal. But his own salary cap issues force him to lose this deal.

This is the first year where a "salary cap" cycle should receive significant consideration in trade talks. In the past, you could be over the cap and it was very manageable as majority of teams had cap room. Not the case anymore. You may win one deal while adding cap, but will you lose the next deal by more to save cap to get under?

How many teams out there are over the cap?

Also - I can completely foresee this becoming a game of hot potato, where GMs consistent receive overpayment to add cap/overpay to lose cap.

We'll get to October and there will be 2-3 GMs who will need to pay through the nose to rebuilding teams to get under the cap at the last minute.

I don't know but if I had to estimate, at least 5 are over, possibly 7-10. Some have ways around it with waiver exempt players. Of the remaining 20-25, I bet 10-15 ish are right at the ceiling with/without plans for the potential UFA signings to come. While 5-7 ish are sitting pretty with 10+M in cap, and they will cash in big around October.

not entirely true. I was cap compliant before this trade but would have had to sell Cullen for prospects as he was my 6th C. I made this trade as I could fit either Cullen + Stafford or Richards + Chimera on my roster. It was a case of too many centers more than anything but decided Richards was the best guy to trade as Cullen is actually better at the stats I care about (other than points of course). I didn't have to make this trade to be cap compliant and could have stayed status quo but by losing value I got better overall. So its a lose/win trade for me.

You are? My spreadsheet shows you at 6.75M in space with 5 roster spots to fill (haven't included FAs like Gilbert and Raymond). My math could be wrong though. Regardless, my point about the salary cap hot potato game is going to hold true in October. Someone is getting fucked lol.

Lol why are you keeping spread sheets for other teams lol. obsessive much haha.

your math is way off though. as It sits I am about 175 thousand over the cap with a conservative over estimate with what Raymond will sign for. So basically as long as he isn't getting overpaid, I will be fine. You are probably including all my extra forwards which I plan on moving right before roster submission next season.

Yeah I should probably update it. And as to your question: why wouldn't I keep a spreadsheet of all my competitors?

I think you think it takes a lot of time, which it doesn't. After I did it the first time, it barely takes 30 mins to update.

Btw, I love poker and when put to a decision about my chips (or players), it's very useful to know what range of hands your opponent could be holding (in this case that information is free).

I'm also a marketer and can't make any decisions there without market research.

I highly doubt I'm the only one who has this kind of a spreadsheet.
