Once again, you display your one-dimensional approach to things. I'd call you a pseudointellectual with a desperate need to have someone validate your smrts, but I don't want to hurt your feelings some more. And once again, I'm talking about that particular bonus incentive, the unlikelihood of reaching it, and how smart Lombardi was for having a bonus inserted that is near impossible for a rookie or sophomore to reach so the pro-team could save precious cap-room.

Chris please don't worry about hurting my feelings, I don't care if you think I'm smart or not; I have no clue why that's being brought up when we are discussing player contracts. Calling my comments 1-dimensional is not very helpful to our conversation, are you implying that I'm failing to see some complexity (literally another dimension in this case)?

I'm currently having this conversation with a friend as well, and figured I'd throw out where it's at:

My understanding of ELC's and the associated types performance bonuses, is based on my readings of the CBA (exhibit 5 , pg260-265) and they indicate to me that these extremely hard to reach "B" bonuses are at least somewhat common, in the very nature of the writings.

It's worth noting that the Standard Player Contract (SPC) and "A" Individual Bonuses are paid by the club, and are limited to (based on year of signing) $900k and $850k respectively.
The "A" bonuses are broken down by category, each of which is capped at $212 500.
SPC + A <= $1.75M. This base format is very consistent amongst lots of the higher draft selections/highly sought after ELC-eligible players. How easy they are to reach in most cases would be pure speculation, however i expect that the whole range is used, just depends on the situation. (This is where the Gudbranson talks broke down supposedly).

"B" awards can be paid by the league and/or club, they are relative to league-wide performance rankings and awards. The Maximum a CLUB can pay to a player (in addition to what the league pays for the set out criteria - see page 263-264 for list) for the "B" awards is $2M.

An example of a "B" Award is winning the Calder -> league pays $212,500, $.15M for 2nd, $.1M for 3rd. The Club can play the player in addition to this.
Another example of a "B" bonus is top 10 in Assists -> league pays $150/140/130 -> 10th = 60k -> in addition to that the the Club has a bonus for the player finishing in the top ten in goals of $500k, the player receives both.

So I guess this is the first stage of me not being entirely comfortable with Dreger's post; 25+ min over 82 games is not a league performance measure.... it's not even a team comparison, that's an isolated stat and doesn't fit under "B" Bonuses.

But moving on from that, suppose somehow 25(+)min/82gp or whatever is somehow allowed under "B" League-wide Awards/Trophies and League Performance Bonuses

I believe most of the "B" bonuses are by their very natural near impossible for a rookie or sophomore to reach, and because $1.75M is the max the SPC + "A" Bonuses can pay, many of the $2M+ ELCs will in fact be making much less. Which lead me to comment " not a unique contract" -> in that many ELC bonuses are designed to create cap early, once it is known the Player has failed to meet the requirements, especially if my understanding of "B" bonuses (needing to meet a league performance) is correct.

Much of the confusion (IMO) with cap-hit/salary is in that day-to-day calculation required. The media and most fans (not including you there) try and make it too simple.

For the love of Gordie Howe, the context of the CBA is not in question. It's the fact that Schenn signed a contract with a bonus structure embedded that drops his cap-hit nearly in half if he misses even one game. It's a smart smart smart move on Lombardi's part because if cap-space is an issue, they can simply send Schenn down to the minors while the pro team plays one game, and call him up with a 1.75M cap hit instead of 3.11M, rather than waiting until the end of the season or until he misses a game.

Is that simple enough for you now?

I dunno. Looks more like a PK worry than an imminent move.

He definitely helps out on the PK, but adds to a log jam down the middle (Conolly, Grabovski, Bozak, Lombardi, and Dupuis).

I also think Connolly is far more hurt than the Leafs are letting on. Meaning that Lombardi might be moving up to the third line, and Bozak takes over for Connolly down the middle. Ouch.

Hopefully Bozak doesn't get traded. I will be sad :(.

Can't see why burke would move him now though. Surely his value is at it's lowest point after the "terrible" year he had this past season.

Thats a bad get by the Leafs. I have been trolling many devils forums since training camp to follow the unlikely demise of Steve Bernier and i couldnt believe how many fans were cringing at the thought of having Steckel on there 4th line. On a side note, I can make the assumption that Bradley Mills made the team :D
