Contract Question for the CC

Post by Chris »

Schenn has a bonus clause in his contract that improvises that if he plays 82 games of 25 minutes or more, he gets a bonus payout of 1.265M. If he misses one game, he loses that bonus. So his contract throughout the year will be 1.75M after the opening game of the season in which he'll be called up afterwards. Which cap-hit do I use?

Edit: I should also make it clear that if the cap-hit drops, I'm essentially screwed as my cap will drop me below the floor to 16.586M - leaving me to find roughly 600K to stay above the floor. Another issue is that no one knew about this bonus clause until Darren Dreger reported it moments ago:
Brayden Schenn's contract is interesting. He could earn a "B" bonus of $1.265 this season if he played 25 mins or more in all 82 games.
Same "B" bonus for Schenn next year, but it's a $1.405 pay out for all 82. For those reasons Schenn will play 1 game in AHL to start.
by playing just 1 game in the AHL, Schenn's cap hit drops from over $3 mil to $1.75. He still earns $900,000 in salary and $850,000 in bonus

His cap number is 3.11 mil for 2011-2012. The bonuses are incorporated into his cap hit.

We have no ruling on this, it is literally an unprecedented case.

For the record, his cap-hit goes back to 3.11M the following year. But if he misses just one game -- and apparently it has to be the first game -- then he gets 1.75M this year, 1.705M the next. So do I account for the base of his contract?

I definitely won't complain if it stays at 3.11M. I just wanted to be as transparent as possible about this.

This sorta thing has come up before, lots of rookies have had bonuses that we KNOW they missed, cap is not adjusted day by day, we don't calculate our cap as in depth as the NHL, GMs have trouble with our system as it is.
