BBKL Power Rankings (Skaters only)

Post by Mike »

Note: There are likely many players who could slot in here that I have omitted. I simply asked a few people for their top 10 or so BBKLers and these are the names that were given. If you guys want some more players rated and ranked leave there names (and, if you want to make my life easier, link to their CBS player compare).

All players have their stats multiplied over an 82-game pace. For instance, Crosby, having played only 41 games, had a multiplier of x2 on all his stats. Since Parise's sample was too small I used his 2009/2010 stats. Stats are also weighted differently for Defence and Forwards. For instance, 45 assists for a d-man would earn that player 100 PowerPoints, while a forward would need 60 to hit that same marker.

I've also employed a formula to take into account FOWs and strike a balance between wingers and centermen. Yes, centers do produce an extra stat, but at the same time the center slots on a roster are at a premium.

Here goes, BBKL's assumed best players, in order, with their scores. The scores won't mean much as you don't know exactly how they were calculated, but it does indicate the relative production of one to another.

1. Sidney Crosby (1047)
2. Ryan Kesler (924)
3. Corey Perry (898)
4. Zdeno Chara (854)
5. Alex Ovechkin (852)
6. Kris Letang (830)
7. Shea Weber (824)
8. Jonathan Toews (816)
Eric Staal: 786
9. Mike Green (783)
10. Dion Phaneuf (766)
11. Mike Richards (745)
12. Zach Parise (748) *2009/2010
13. Claude Giroux (737)
14. David Backes (716)
15. Dustin Brown (659)
Duncan Keith: 643

I'm pretty tired, so I could have made an error, but I don't see any at this point.

Sidenote: My boy Grant Clitsome, projecting his small sample of 31 games over 82, scores 673 - my 4th best player.

how did you do the weighting on each category? Ie is a hit for a centre rarer then for a winger, and obviously then for a dman (and each category done in such a manner, I'd just love to play with what you've done).

Note: I cannot really complain, 5 of top 15 on one team seems silly.

The list is solid Mike.

Things missing from the analysis are:

1) Cap Hit
2) Age/Potential/Ceiling

I'd take Letang over Chara, for example. Lol and I'd rather not get started on Kesler vs Ovechkin/Toews.

I'd just love the ranking have some weighting of difference from average for the position.

IE 100min shtoi isn't much for a dman, nor is 80 hits, however both is respectable for a winger

40 points isn't much for a centre, but for a dman is a LOT.

Potential/ceiling is a very subjective thing...we can have 30 different opinions on guys. All you have to do is look at trade values.

If you can factor in stats from previous years to trend if they're improving or regressing in specific stats. I've not had the time to work on it lately but I've gathered the last 3 years of fantasy stats to run some trends and averages.

I've done some things with comparing numbers relative to positions. It's nothing too in depth...take the best numbers of each stat and then rate the rest of the players relative to that.

Both solid points Nick and Shoalzie. That's the thing though. Numbers are very hard to manipulate to generate a flawless ranking with all factors considered.

For everyone wondering, stats are weighted differently for forwards and defence. 100 SHTOI for a forward soes not equal 100 SHTOI for a defenceman. Faceoffs are on a bit of a curve as well.

These ARE NOT the top 15 players in the league, as is ovbious by the fact that Grant Clitsome would be ahead of Dustin Brown. I'm sure we could find a good 10 names that fit in here somewhere.

As for adusting for cap hit: something I've been thinking of for a player value ranking, for sure. But this is just for pure production. To adjust for cap just take total PowerPoints and divide by dollars. Gives you points per dollar.

Yeah, this is just power rankings, not value rankings.

They do. We (Anton and I) took near the top value (excluding serious outliers) in each category and made that equal 100 PowerPoints. For instance, 350 shots on goal is NOT the 100 value for Defence shots on goal because Byfuglien throws it out of whack. I went with something lower, closer to the average of players 2-5 in that category.

Pretty much the approach I took here.

Out of curiosity, what would Duncan Keith & E Staal's numbers be Mike?

Give me some names you want to see. I need to copy their stats into my excel spreadsheet so doing everyone would take some time...
