"The Stars have not asked Brad to waive his no-trade clause, and at this point in time, he has no intention of doing so," agent Pat Morris told the Daily News Monday night when informed that a source had said a move to the Toronto Maple Leafs could be completed by the end of this week. "We're still pointing toward July 1."

July 1 is when Richards becomes an unrestricted free agent. Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk said last week that because of ownership uncertainty, Dallas would not be able to re-sign Richards, and would look to get something in exchange for the exclusive rights to negotiate with him before the end of the month.

Still, a source told The News Monday night that the Maple Leafs felt close enough to making such a deal that they already have plans in place for subsequent moves to clear salary-cap room for Richards, who made $7.8 million this season.

"It's legit," the source said. "Toronto is desperate for a star like this."

No, but I've gotten my hopes up about the past 5 Trade Deadlines, Drafts, Free Agencies, etc. Not anymore.

Leafs Rumours are plentiful, and none seem to come to fruition. So I'll wait until they happen.

IRL, I don't care about anything. Optimistic and the most easy going guy you'll ever meet.

I'd only be willing to move a first if it were absolutely necessary to sign Brad Richards before July 1st, and I don't believe that to be the case.

Lower that by one pick, and it's more realistic. Teams just don't give away first rounders to obtain a player's rights. Nevermind Brad Richards, who has both a NMC and short list of teams that can a) afford him, and b) fir his criterion. This is no at all like the Hartnell example listed above, think more along the lines of Jay Bouwmeester.

you're missing the part where if Brad Richards is coming here anyway (which imo does not change with paying for his rights. he will make up his mind in the end regardless), you are losing a 1st for no reason.

That news story reeks of rumour and speculation to me.

Notably that we need to shed cap - clearly not accurate.

No doubting that it sure would be nice - and that he appears to be exactly what we are missing- #1 playmaking centre who can QB a powerplay.

Your argument is too black and white, it assumes that Richards will eventually set his mind on one team, and that nothing will change that. If his mind is not made up on any one team, an extra week or two of negotiating could sway his opinion towards the team who traded for his rights.
