BBKL Playoff Format (Final Vote)
http://bbkl.ca/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=16656
Thanks for those who participated in the first vote.
One option didn't run away with voting but it seems like the majority view of the voting leaned towards us adopting some form of a top 8 conference format.
Each option includes the idea that the division winners will occupy the #1 and #2 seeds in their respective conference.
Option 1 is a hybrid option using the current NHL playoff format of top 3 teams in each division qualifying and the two wild card spots would round out the 8 teams the make the playoffs. The division winners take 1 and 2 and the 6 remaining teams would be seeded based on points.
Option 2 is essentially the previous top 8 conference format that the NHL had been using. The major difference between option 1 and 2 would be that option 2 wouldn't guarantee 3 teams from each division making the playoffs. A stronger division could have more than 5 qualifying teams.

Option 1: that way divisions are somewhat important too.

Gonna take a day or two to think
Re: BBKL Playoff Format (Final Vote)
I like the top 8 option. Let the best teams participate.
I`ve seen plenty of comments around the league being stale - well repeating the same matchups every year leads to that. I much prefer, in a fanatasy setting, allowing the best to participate and let the matchups be more interesting every year.

Re: BBKL Playoff Format (Final Vote)
Neither of these repeat the same matchups. Both are a re-seeding of the 8 teams getting into the playoffs 1-8 once we get to the playoffs.Da_Hawks wroteCOLONI like the top 8 option. Let the best teams participate.

However, for making the playoffs it goes:
First one goes 3 from each division with 2 wildcards.
Second one goes straight top 8 teams from the conference.

Having some variety with the playoffs is obviously more interesting. I'm sure Dave has this information but I can't imagine there's a lot of turnover in terms of playoff teams year-over-year. Meaning, you might see just a team or two make the playoffs when they might've not done it in the previous year.
For me, I know I'm on quite a playoff drought. I'm curious to know how many teams have made our playoffs over the past 5 years or the further back over the past 10 years.
By nature, you're going to see repeat matchups because the playoff teams are generally the same. It is nice seeing some of the teams who have been accumulating young talent now ascending in the standings...Anaheim/Edmonton/New Jersey immediately come to mind. Roster turnover would lead to more variety in the league but that is probably more of an organic change over time. It would be difficult to have the same 8 teams always make the playoffs in each conference since every roster has a "half life".
Re: BBKL Playoff Format (Final Vote)
I made the playoffs last year for the first time. This year I'm not even close to a playoff position.

In both cases division winners are seed #1 and #2 though, right?Matthew wroteCOLONNeither of these repeat the same matchups. Both are a re-seeding of the 8 teams getting into the playoffs 1-8 once we get to the playoffs.Da_Hawks wroteCOLONI like the top 8 option. Let the best teams participate.

Yes, as this is a carryover from the previous poll

Small sample size, Matthew...only 6 matchups out of 82 have been played. Teams are always capable of a few clunker weeks during a season.
You have enough depth where a slow start for Makar wouldn't sink you but I know your goaltending hasn't been up to snuff so far.

Yup, it was built into both proposed ideas.
I'll be curious to see how close this vote ends up being because I think the difference in these two formats is pretty small.
I think we'd most likely end up with the same 8 teams either way but it just gets delivered in a different way. Option 1 would at least things more interesting within the division.
Let's say if the 6th best team from one division was somehow better than the 3rd best team in the opposite division but they'd only make the playoffs in just one of the two options. I wonder how often that has happened with us.
Re: BBKL Playoff Format (Final Vote)
I feel like both options will result in the same 8 teams almost every time. I feel like there might not have ever been a scenario where in a conference 6 of the top 8 teams were in one division.

Re: BBKL Playoff Format (Final Vote)
Agree with this. But I still like the top 8 teams full stop. Would be BS for the 6th place team in one division to have more points than the 3rd in another and not get in... as this would imply that the 6th place team likely is also in a harder division. Why penalize them even further?Bruyns wroteCOLONI feel like both options will result in the same 8 teams almost every time. Re: BBKL Playoff Format (Final Vote)
What's the point of divisions if we go with option 2. We'll have to abolish them so it's easier to see the standings.Matthew wroteCOLONOption 1: that way divisions are somewhat important too.

Re: BBKL Playoff Format (Final Vote)
Still need divisions to have division winners.

League isn’t stale. It’s just a draft and develop league now and some ppl are pissy I guess that they can’t make a thousand trades at stupid discounts these days I guess.Da_Hawks wroteCOLONI like the top 8 option. Let the best teams participate.

Re: BBKL Playoff Format (Final Vote)
My personal opinion is that if we're going to minimize the value of divisions, we may as well go all the way and just seed 1-16.
Re: BBKL Playoff Format (Final Vote)
that option only received 5 votes in the previous pollCasperX22 wroteCOLONMy personal opinion is that if we're going to minimize the value of divisions, we may as well go all the way and just seed 1-16.
Re: BBKL Playoff Format (Final Vote)
Whoopdee do? Everyone will adapt to whatever is decided, but logically I don't see how you can minimize the importance of divisional play and in the same breath promote the importance of conference play just because that's what the NHL used to do. There is no need for divisions if division play doesn't really matter. It defeats the purpose of what divisions were created for in the 1st place.dave1959 wroteCOLONthat option only received 5 votes in the previous pollCasperX22 wroteCOLONMy personal opinion is that if we're going to minimize the value of divisions, we may as well go all the way and just seed 1-16.
