SuperMario wroteCOLONI was listening to Dave Nonis on the radio yesterday and he was asked the question: "what would you differently if you had to go back in this year and do it?"

His answer: "Looking back I would have made more moves at the deadline. But it's tough to say now because we were 9 points into a playoff spot. So at the time, I thought we were okay."

It boggles my mind that he didn't think this defence needed help. Meanwhile, Montreal acquires Weaver for a 5th? Philly gets Macdonald for a 2nd + 3rd? I'm not a believer in trading futures for pending UFAs. But I"m pretty certain we could have gotten SOME help from somewhere without mortgaging our future. We didn't need to get Vanek - the guy they spent most of the day on. They should have spent the day getting a d-man.

During the year, the following d-men were moved:

Diaz (5th)
Klein (Del Zotto)
Meszaros (3rd)
Schultz (5th)
Macdonald (2nd, 3rd)
Robidas (4th)
Weaver (5th)

I just don't believe there wasn't one d-man we could have gotten for a 4th or 5th.
I 100% agree, i use to talk to shook a lot about Nonis, and he said this woudl happen.

Said Nonis gets 'stuck on' certainly players and trades and will miss out on other deals. That was clear at this deadline. This years UFA crop has some decent, yet older dman available.

i'm sticking to my guns when i say we need to trade gunnar for an improvement up front, give granberg his spot, and sign a good dman via - free agency.

we also need to bring back Komorov...that guy actually played like he gave a shit.

Plus he's only 27 so the deal only has him signed till he's 33. It's kind of why I wanted the Leafs to acquire him at the deadline... Could have probably avoided the collapse too.
I had my fingers crossed for 4.5M - and I definitely wanted the Leafs to get him at deadline, a mobile defensive dman? it's where the game is going.

Schenn-MacDonald has been an unreal shut down pair for philly, together they make as many saves as the goalies do!

that would make it easier than being fired. But i can't see it happening, he's locked up 2 or 3 more years, which means when he gets fired they have to pay it out.

That's like a 4million dollar bonus for getting fired.

Typically in termination clauses the pay ceases if he finds a new job. As an NHL coach if you go MIA for 2 or 3 years that's probably good-bye.

the question was asked, "do you expect to be fired"

and he responded by saying:

'I'm still here now'
'I talked to shanny yesterday and everything seemed fine'
'but saying that anything can change during the summer'

MacDonald is the 21st richest contract for a D and most Flyers fans online/twitter aren't too happy with the deal.

Interesting article on him explaining why his stats look so bad even though he is good in his own end.

Nice article.

Read the Tulsky article on zone entries that linked in that one btw. Some great ideas in there.
