What's Your Opinion: Canada vs Kessel/JVR in the Olympics

Imo it is but to a lesser degree. One is your favourite team, and one is your country. There is a big difference there imo. I think it is a lot easier to cheer for another NHL team vs another nationality.

I, for one, will take every edge I can get to help avoid a drought that lasts 60 years.

I don't think thats the point of disagreement at all. I would rather the Leafs win the Stanley Cup as well. The point of disagreement is where you think a players Olympic achievements are directly correlated to better play in the NHL.

Us immigrants (or with previous immigrant parents) dont really have as strong a sentimental attachments to canada as much as native born would. I can sometimes see intrigue/INTERESToutside of canadian box but not necessarily PATRIOTIC to them.

With the NHL involvement in the Olympics, it kinda tests your national loyalty depending on where your players are from. I'd like to think most would root for their native country first...me included. Then I root for the teams with some of my players and I've got some Swedish heritage from a couple generations back so naturally, the Swedes are my Team B.

I'd love to see a Sweden-USA final but no question would I like to see Team USA win the gold. If they went back to amateurs only, I'd probably be even more pro-USA because I wouldn't have any loyalties to the other nations since there aren't NHLers involved. It's very easy to root for the Americans in all the other events because all they do is rep the nation in other competitions.

It might not be your intention, but your posts make it seem like you're not rooting very hard. You were picking the US before the tourny started and critiquing the Canadian's play. You might be cheering for Canada, but to an outside observer who only read your posts over the last week it looks like you want the US to win based on 2 Leafs being on the team. Almost seems like you want to "win" either way with the US and Leafs winning like you predicted or Canada winning so you can say that's what you wanted all along.

Pretty much proving my point here. If this thread popped up after Canada lost, everyone would root for Kessel and JVR. But because we're discussing it before, it's all about being politically correct.

I agree with this, I think most people would be fine with Kessel and JVR winning gold, but when it's talked about when Canada is still alive most people will cheer for Canada and could care less how the Leafs players do.
