Is that not the same thing as someone from Canada cheering for any Canadian team if their team were eliminated or routing for which ever team has a good core of Canadian players or just players you love? Imo it is but to a lesser degree. One is your favourite team, and one is your country. There is a big difference there imo. I think it is a lot easier to cheer for another NHL team vs another nationality.SuperMario wroteCOLONIt's different man. I could never cheer for the Habs. To give you our point of view Shiv, would be so optimistically viewing the success of another NHL team if they were about to play your Maple Leafs? I feel the answer would be no.

Canada will have an all-star team every Olympics. I really don't care if a player on a Leafs' rival gets experience.
Also, I think I've discovered a point of disagreement. To me, Leafs Stanley Cup >>> Canada Olympic Gold. I've already seen Canada win two HUGE Olympic Golds in my life time. Kessel and JVR have a 7 ish year window to win a cup, and after that it will likely be another rebuild around here. I, for one, will take every edge I can get to help avoid a drought that lasts 60 years.
Re: What's Your Opinion: Canada vs Kessel/JVR in the Olympic
I don't think thats the point of disagreement at all. I would rather the Leafs win the Stanley Cup as well. The point of disagreement is where you think a players Olympic achievements are directly correlated to better play in the NHL.SuperMario wroteCOLON

I have no idea how you Canadians cheer for anybody outside of Canada.

Id rather a Canucks cup then an olympic gold wothout question. However, I can find some joy in other nhl teams winning the cup because I am not a Vancouver Canuck. I am however a Canadian and in turn am represented by our boys over there. This is the reason i cannot route nor find joy in any countries succes other than Canada's. I love my country and take pride in having the best hockey tradition of any country in the world. Gold or bust.

And I'd also prefer Leafs cup over the Gold medal.

The underlined statement contradicts the whole patriotism politician/politically correct spiel that follows it. It's paradoxical. It's not consistent with the hierarchy of how you, Shep or BryMa value a Cup vs a Gold.shooker wroteCOLONId rather a Canucks cup then an olympic gold wothout question. Also, I repeat: I am rooting for Canada all the way. Only if Canada loses is what we are talking about so this whole patriotism talk is completely unnecessary and absolutely irrelevant to the topic at hand.

Simple question for Shook, Shep and BryMa:
Assume Canada loses on Friday. Who do you root for? <-- assume you're a Leaf fan for this question Shook.

If USA loses I side with Canada for gold. N.America > everyone.
Shook should go with the US because of Kesler, amirite

I probably wouldn't get up to watch it at 7:30am anyways if Canada wasn't sure.

99.9% of us don't
I'm a Sens fan, and if Canada doesn't win, I don't give a sweet fuck if Sweden wins because Karlsson plays for them.
I couldn't care less.
If Canada goes for gold I'll be watching the game with fellow Canadians in one of the bars on the resort, if not, I'll be on the beach (in Punta Cana)
Re: What's Your Opinion: Canada vs Kessel/JVR in the Olympic
Us immigrants (or with previous immigrant parents) dont really have as strong a sentimental attachments to canada as much as native born would. I can sometimes see intrigue/INTERESToutside of canadian box but not necessarily PATRIOTIC to them.

Re: What's Your Opinion: Canada vs Kessel/JVR in the Olympic
With the NHL involvement in the Olympics, it kinda tests your national loyalty depending on where your players are from. I'd like to think most would root for their native country first...me included. Then I root for the teams with some of my players and I've got some Swedish heritage from a couple generations back so naturally, the Swedes are my Team B.
I'd love to see a Sweden-USA final but no question would I like to see Team USA win the gold. If they went back to amateurs only, I'd probably be even more pro-USA because I wouldn't have any loyalties to the other nations since there aren't NHLers involved. It's very easy to root for the Americans in all the other events because all they do is rep the nation in other competitions.

It might not be your intention, but your posts make it seem like you're not rooting very hard. You were picking the US before the tourny started and critiquing the Canadian's play. You might be cheering for Canada, but to an outside observer who only read your posts over the last week it looks like you want the US to win based on 2 Leafs being on the team. Almost seems like you want to "win" either way with the US and Leafs winning like you predicted or Canada winning so you can say that's what you wanted all along.SuperMario wroteCOLONAlso, I repeat: I am rooting for Canada all the way. IF Canada lost than sure it would be nice if Kessel and JVR won, but I'm a team Canada fan first and foremost. Not as die hard a fan as I am a Leafs fan, but I'm still patriotic enough to not even talk about and consider if it would help Kessel's career because it won't matter once team Canada beats the US tomorrow. If a thread like this popped up after the game then sure I could get behind the Leafs players, but when they haven't even played yet I think the correct response for Canadian Leafs fans is "nice tourny Phil and JVR, but it's not your fault you lost to the superior team".

Re: What's Your Opinion: Canada vs Kessel/JVR in the Olympic
Pretty much proving my point here. If this thread popped up after Canada lost, everyone would root for Kessel and JVR. But because we're discussing it before, it's all about being politically correct.Bruyns wroteCOLONIt might not be your intention, but your posts make it seem like you're not rooting very hard. For me, it was just to have a discussion. But I've discovered that a topic like this is way too offside with some people.
Re: What's Your Opinion: Canada vs Kessel/JVR in the Olympic
I agree with this, I think most people would be fine with Kessel and JVR winning gold, but when it's talked about when Canada is still alive most people will cheer for Canada and could care less how the Leafs players do.
