WPG/TBL: What's old is new again.
Re: WPG/TBL: What's old is new again.
So that wasn't an obvious gross exaggeration on my part?

Hey, did anyone else pay tribute to the rocket by going to his jersey retirement ?

The only comparison they have is that they are both Russian.Nick wroteCOLONYak is Bure - game is different and Oil don't have Patt Quinn making it work.

Yak is def not Bure LOLNick wroteCOLONYak is Bure - game is different and Oil don't have Patt Quinn making it work.
i dont even see the comparisons - with yak's upside....but i will say, eakins is an issue in edmonton, they've already shut down on him and his sytem.
Like, the oil look worse every game.

Re: WPG/TBL: What's old is new again.
I have some faith in Eakins, iirc started slow with the Marlies as well, but sure did good things with them and a lot of our young-guys.
Now - will he ever get through to Yak or accept his style of play? I dunno.

Oh man.... wouldn't go that far yet nick does he have similar skill set than bure yes, does he have unreal skating like bure yes does he have bure like speed I'd say yes, but now I ask you this does yak wow you every time he's on the ice no, does yak go end to end on a regular basis and score goals? No I know yaks played only 50 plus games in the nhl and he's still young but to say he's Bure is a little out there IMO right now in yaks carrier, I wanna see what yak will be like in 2 to 3 years he's a very skill player and a very special player IMO with some great skills but just like all young players he needs some time to figure it out and mature, Dallas Eakin will make him your break him IMO time will tellSuperMario wroteCOLONLOL...He has not shown anything close to it. In one place they are developing, in another they should be developed.
To me, it looks like Eakins is trying to install the same framework with an NHL team as he did an AHL team...doesnt work, they are 2 different worlds.
if i was the GM of the oilers Eakins would be long gone, heck, i would have never hired him

Hahaha I would t go that far
Re: WPG/TBL: What's old is new again.
My statement was not meant as serious nor complete.
Do I think yak is the most dynamic goal scorer in the last 2+ decades? No.
I also believe the game has changed, big time - and he walked into a VERY different situation than Bure (who joined a team lacking skill, a dynamic personality, and offensive flare, but had lots of character, a Hall of Fame Coach/GM and one hell of a captain), there's no Gino on the Oil.
I do think he's a Russian goal scorer in the classic model wherein he likes to have the puck on his stick from his own blue-line right through to the moment in goes in the oppositions net.
FWIW my opinion on his current play is clearly articulated by my roster decision-> he's on the bench.

Both number 1 picks with a quick start to their NHL careers, and both who 'suddenly' just couldn't produce anymore. i think if we're going to compare players we need to at how that player is currently doing, and compare it to others with similar skillsets and 1st overall picks.
Dont forget, Daigle was fast too, explosive speed, great vision, 2 way game...very similar to yak. Maybe Yak can still put it all together, but to this point he's def more of a Daigle than a Bure.

Re: WPG/TBL: What's old is new again.
Not saying it will happen with Yakupov, but there is definitely a chance he leaves for the KHL imo. He has the "Russian" mentatlity for lack of a better way to put it. He think he's a star already because he knows he would be in the KHL.
The Daigle comparison seems like a stretch right now but could happen. Yakupov is one #1 overall pick with who I can see a similar storyline, even if unlikely

i was using the Daigle as a stretch - i was trying to show that there's as much as a chance he becomes a Daigle as a Bure.SuperMario wroteCOLONNot saying it will happen with Yakupov, but there is definitely a chance he leaves for the KHL imo. i actuallty thiink a change out of edmonton would help the kid, i feel bad for any player who has to rot their career(s) away there.

Re: WPG/TBL: What's old is new again.
I agree with steve and shiv actually. Meh i guess weber for stamkos isn't bad
Re: WPG/TBL: What's old is new again.
They had similar rookie seasons, but Daigle was a much better 2nd year player.

Re: WPG/TBL: What's old is new again.
Yak will turn it around, I have confidence in three years he will either be a 30G scorer or a KHL all star.
Re: WPG/TBL: What's old is new again.
He was on pace to be a 30g scorer in his first NHL season (had it not been shortened) - iirc he was a on tear to end the year, just hitting form/PP toi.
If we'd like to have an actual conversation about career paths, Yak has more in common with Seguin than anyone else mentioned.
