We'll find out more about this and see what role family and this kid's parents and his childhood may played into this. Guns were the vehicle to this act but further decay in the act of parenting likely played a role in this as well. Social decay is probably as much of a problem or is a root cause of violence. We have wonderful people here but we also have people that develop volcanic-like rage and anger that can erupt and in a big way.

Every parent in this country needs to be attentive and know what they're children are doing and be a positive influence in their lives. A lot of the problems will be solved if we continue to grow and evolve as a people. I know faith can play a big part in keeping families and community together but for me as an agnostic, you just need to know how to treat others around you and to just be the best person you can be. We here tend to value "I" and "me" more times than value "we" and "us". Hold yourself and those around you to a higher standard...I can't say it enough.
well said agree on all points, i have no doubt that he suffered from sort of neglect and/or abuse(physical or otherwise) when he was a young child probably same age as the children he killed, majority of these kinds of killings are rooted in the perverse way of how some people parent their children, which is another big part of the problem

secondly, some of the killings, not necessarily this one breed copy cat killers who try to out do each other, understandibly so the media has to report and delve into all the questions around this massacre but on the other hand they are ensuring that the guy who did this will be worshipped by many people and there will be a handful who might go so far as to try and honor his memory by doing something similarly horrific.. the question arises how does the media deal with these types of slayings to limit them from being repeated by so called copy cats

lastly, i dont know if i missed it or not whether it was mentioned in this thread, but there was another psycho in china who stabbed 20 something elementary school children on the same day as this, a tragedy in its own right, one which some of the victims may not recover from though some will, however there were zero fatalities... one can draw alot of parallels out of the two situations, where you have two people who are of the same mindset with the same goals, though in one country you can get a gun on every other street corner, and brutal killings do and will continue to happen, in the other country you cannot easily obtain a weapon and that is ultimately what was the determining factor which prevent more innocent lives from being lost

I changed title of this thread. I made this post when news was thin. Scott is right in his first post. I also shed many tears over this Tony. Innocent little beautiful children lost because of some mentally and socially disturbed person with access to firearms. This whole thing gives me pain to even think about.

This has much more to do with mental instability than a 'rough' upbringing. Sure, an upbringing and parenting will play a part, but there is no doubt in my mind that there are and were mental issues that he had and should have (or was) being medicated for.

This guy just looks like a psycho. I realize looks mean nothing, but just saying.

Article showing both an odd parenting strategy (Mom was a bit 'off' it seems) and social and psychological problems Adam Lanza was facing.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world ... 22298.html
It has also emerged that Mrs Lanza had spoken of her fears about her son Adam's behaviour less than a week before the attack.

According to reports she told a friend that she feared "losing" her son", that his state of mind was "getting worse" and that "she was having trouble reaching him".

It has also been reported than Adam Lanza's social awkwardness had caused so much concern at his high school that he was assigned a psychologist.
Mrs Lanza is thought to have trained her sons, Adam and Ryan to shoot, even taking them to local ranges.

Friends and family have portrayed Mrs Lanza as a paranoid ‘survivalist’ who believed the world was on the brink of violent collapse.

It is and always has been mental illness. This is not an excuse, it's a serious problem that is much to often neglected.

If guns weren't easier to attain in the US, it would be a knife, it would be a bomb, it would be something else. If they are going to go through with a horrific act like this, they will use any form of weapon they can readily attain.

I think we see eye to eye on this. what you said here sums up everything imo.

I was working down in the States (williamsport PA mainly) this past year for a few months and during that time, one of my crew members was shot at. This crew member was lost and decided to pull into a driveway to turn around and look at his map. However, unknown to this employee, he was not allowed to be on this mans property. This land owner in turn took out a gun and shot out his back tire....yea. How does this happen.

Next story. Got wasted when I was down in Florida with some friends and went out to the bar by the shipyard they worked out. Soon enough we had made friends with some old ship captains and wound up going back to their place to fire their hand guns... Crazy drunken night but again how is this so easy to do?

Now I am not saying that Americans are bad people or all crazy as it is simply untrue as there are bad and crazy people everywhere, but how can situations like this happen so easily. THERE HAVE TO BE STRICTER GUN LAWS. Simply put I understand the desire for common folks to have guns as I am from a small town where shooting guns is common. however, there is no need to be allowed every type of gun. I do not see the need for any person to own any gun other than a rifle, shotgun or other useful gun for hunting. Hand guns should be restricted to ranges to allow those people that need it, to get it out of your system. I have spent limited time in the states and have two personal stories about hand guns. That stat Chuck posted is evidence enough, it is time for a change.

I realize I am a Canadian and do not know everything about this 2nd amendment but if you saw your neighbour playing with guns dangerously wouldn't you be concerned as well?

Now the conspiracy theorists are out in full force.

Saying the father of one of these dead girls is an actor because he was smiling and joking before his press conference, then put on his "sad" face (which admittedly is a bit weird)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=urrRcgB5 ... r_embedded[/youtube]

Then there's the mysterious "2nd shooter". There's a video of police chasing a guy into the woods and hand-cuffing him but nothing was ever made of it after the fact - the 2nd shooter thing just sort of went away.

What this is all supposed to mean, i have no idea.
