i guess you didn't read much of the previous posts.. i have no problem with following the NHL realignment per se.
Mik you can argue as much as you want. Whatever the NHL format is next year for conferences and playoffs, that will be our format. Whether you like it or not, we emulate the NHL as best as possible. So suck it up.

As much as possible or as best as possible?

Personally i'm against emulating the NHL as much as possible no matter if it makes our league worse.
We are not the same as the NHL: they have TV ratings, they have travelling schedules.. we don't have those things that were the main reasons for their changement.

The new system that the NHL will use to qualify for the playoffs will make our league less fair and less competitive during the RS, hence i don't think we should implement it exactly as it is.
Negating the drawbacks just because "that's what the NHL does" doesn't make sense to me, i'm trying to get an aware decision at least and it's not like we lack time before next season starts.

As much as possible is the goal. I.e. Conferences, Playoffs.

As best as possible when we can't mimick. I.e. Our Schedule is 21 weeks. We can't change that.

Our conferences and playoffs will always be set up exactly the same as the NHL. It is the most basic way to emulate the NHL.

If there is a casualty of this system, then so be it. Deal with it.

The new format is definitely different but we (the BBKL) should still stick with it if we're priding ourselves on being as realistic a fantasy hockey league can be. Based on the current strength of the league, the new conferences will seem skewed but I don't know if we're going to need to revisit the idea of shuffling around team identities to even it out. The uneven number of teams in each "conference" annoys me and that's why I liked the six 5-team division format work for 30 teams.

For the NHL itself, I'm good with the new format...even the conference playoff format will be like old the division playoff format. I missed the days of the Wings, Blackhawks, Leafs, North Stars, Blues battling it out in Norris playoffs. Then, with the semifinals...what are they going to call it? Stanley Cup Semifinals? I like the re-seeding idea after conference playoffs. Plus, the fact you get to play every team home and away at least once is great. I don't think there was a perfect solution...I think they wanted to go a different direction and I think this can add some new excitement to the league.

Plus, I have to imagine with the All-Star game, they've gone to the draft format...no longer are we doing the East-West or Wales-Campbell or even North America-World...we're doing the draft each year from now on.

if there is a fixable flaw "then so be it" no matter what it is?

there are two significant flaws here that GMs should at least recognize:

1- less fair than current system
people keep saying we already have teams making the playoffs over some others only because of the conference, so nothing will change for that matter...

well, that's WRONG:
same concept, but different extent.
having four 4/7-8 groups instead of two 8/16 groups changes the probability of that occurrence.

Just try to think of the league divided into 15 different divisions:
2 teams per division, only one qualifies for the playoffs.
-> same concept applies: it's clear (despite the fact pts total won't be comparable because of the different schedule) that some teams won't make it to the playoffs only because of the division they are into. A top 5 team might easily miss the playoff because of his division.

Now try to tell me with a straight face that's nothing different from what we experience right now with the 2 conferences system
With the 15 divisions it's still the same concept, but it clearly applies to a larger extent and makes things completely different (unfair) as a result.
with four 4/7 conferences the extent of the problem is obviously not as bad as with those absurd 1/2 divisions, but it's also obviously much worse than with the current 8/16 conferences.

I hope people will stop putting their heads in the sand and negating this.

2- potentially boring regular season
The competion will basically only be about being in the top 4 of your conference, or not.

If a team finishes #1 or #4 basically nothing changes: same opponent in the 1st round, same opponent in the 2nd round. In the NHL they at least have the home advantage for game 7, we don't even use any home advantage..

The regular season for divisions where there happen to be 4 teams clearly above the rest will be a borefest. And it's easier to have a clear gap between 4 teams and 3 others than between 8 teams and 8 others.
In some divisions the second part of the RS might become pointless.
Heck, the most significant competition might be the tanking of the virtually eliminated teams.

And it's not like to fix these 2 flaws we couldn't follow most of what the NHL will do:
playoff qualification and seeding system are the only things you need to change to have a format even better than the one we currently use.

I really don't see the problem.. we'll still have playoffs, your division will mean more, and life will continue..

Cry me a fucking river, Mik. Everyone is aware of the points you just stated. It doesn't take a genius to figure it out.

If a team's division is hard, TOUGH. Find a way to be in the top 4. If you're not in the top 4, then build your team so that it is the next year.

Be a good GM. Adapt to the new system.

But stop fucking crying about it.

Let's be honest..if you're not a top 4 team in your own division, you probably don't have a shot at winning the championship anyways and therefore it shouldn't be a big deal if you don't make the playoffs.

Well.. I like competitiveness and some faith in your team even if not #1 in div, so like Mik I worried about the realization of not making it leading to lots of tankings... But that seems to happen way way before a team knows whether or not it'll look at playoffs.

As in, this new conf arrangement won't change much for us --- super hard to make it out of the NE but that's fun.

lol:
it's clear that some teams won't make it to the playoffs only because of the division they are in
