Re: 2010-2011 BBKL Playoffs Thread
The advantage of finishing high is competing against a weaker opponent in the playoffs. Adding rank as a tie breaker is an additional incentive, one that is unrealistic, and has no bearing on the H2H competition. Not to mention that the regulaur season standings are inconsistent with the best teams in BBKL, due to the fact that each team does not play each other team an equal number of times.kyuss wroteCOLONcompletely disagree.
the teams that earned the better ranking at the end of the regular season risk to be eliminated, no matter where they finished, over a single week performance (which is btw affected by the real schedule).. it's only fair to me they have at least something tangible to show for the results they achieved during a long RS. The benefit of facing the lower seed could be only theoric, like in real life where they in fact have the home advantage in the tie-breaking game 7.
That also makes the RS more interesting, otherwise once a team is qualified for the PO the rest of the RS matchups would become kinda pointless for its GM..
The tiebreak rule is stupid.

facing #8 or #7 in the 1st round is not a definite advantage, could turn out to be the opposite. So if that was the only (supposed) advantage i wouldn't care at all about finishing 1st or 2nd in my conference. Hence, if at some point of the RS the only competion left would be for 1st or 2nd in the conference, that would make pointless for my team all the matchups remaining in the RS -> BORING.MSP4LYFE wroteCOLON

An even better example would be the 2 top teams from each conference competing for 1st overall in the final standings.
If you give no home advantage it becomes completely useless to finish 1st instead of 2nd overall.

Except that is not true...As I have clearly laid out facing weaker competition is an advantage. I don't understand what you are debating, that is a fact, it is not open to interpretation. The higher you finish, the lower the seed you face throughout the playoffs. It is a concrete incentive to finish higher in the standings. A tie break is not an incentive to finish higher, and the frequency of ties is such that making it incentive based would be meaningless.kyuss wroteCOLONfacing #8 or #7 in the 1st round is not a definite advantage, could turn out to be the opposite. What the tiebreak does however is ruin the spirit of competition, the best team in a given match up should be the victor, not the best team in the regulaur season, using that logic we shouldn't even have playoffs, but rather run the league roto style, with the top team in the overall standing winning the season.
Home ice advantage is a stupid concept in a H2H league, there is no way to replicate it, making the entire notion irrelevant.

the lowest seed can have a better week than a higher seed, it's not a too complicated concept.MSP4LYFE wroteCOLON Except that is not true...As I have clearly laid out facing weaker competition is an advantage. and i'm such an idiot that i would fight for a higher seed for the home advantage more than for facing the lower seed (who knows who would be better to face in that given week anyway), in fact when the decisive rounds come, chances are i would still have to face the better teams.. i'd rather do it with the home advantage if it's taken into account => competition for the higher seed matters more.
More importantly, finishing 1st or 2nd overall would change nothing otherwise and would make it a completely pointless competition, something we should avoid.
except that when two teams tie there is NO better team in such matchup, lol. What the tiebreak does however is ruin the spirit of competition, the best team in a given match up should be the victor
So at least let advance the team that was better during the regular season.

Re: 2010-2011 BBKL Playoffs Thread
If a lower seed could not beat a higher seed there would be no playoffs, the championship would just go to the highest seed. That is not a good enough reason to forfeit the tiebreak to the highest ranked team, and contrary to your claims the vast majority, if not all, teams would prefer to face a lower seed than have the advantage in the event of a tie break. Your reasoning is weak.kyuss wroteCOLONthe lowest seed can have a better week than a higher seed, it's not a too complicated concept.
There is no home ice advantage...This is not real life, besides home ice does not dictate that the higher seed wins after game 6.kyuss wroteCOLONand i'm such an idiot that i would fight for a higher seed for the home advantage more than for facing the lower seed (who knows who would be better to face in that given week anyway), in fact when the decisive rounds come, chances are i would still have to face the better teams.. i'd rather do it with the home advantage if it's taken into account => competition for the higher seed matters more.

Of course there is, teams don't tie in every single cat, and in stat differential. One team could be unlucky and win his cats by a large margin, whereas the opponent won their cats by the slimmest of margins, in such a case there is in fact a better team. There is also the notion of awarding tie breaks to the team with the most SO goals.kyuss wroteCOLONexcept that when two teams tie there is NO better team in such matchup, lol.

Re: 2010-2011 BBKL Playoffs Thread
I don't the idea suggested for a tie breaker being SO goals better than top seed simply winning it. SO goals is useless, when some teams don't go to SO and could win out right in regulation, shouldn't be a decider and definitely a worst idea than just giving it to top seed.
It seems many people don't like the idea, so come up with a few alternatives and vote on it, including the current rule. So far I haven't seen anything I like better personally, maybe who wins what category by how much but that'd have to be quantified better into some sort of formula.

Sharks Canucks 7-7-2 as of right now. Niemi in action right now. Hes got 7 games tmrw (including a goalie game) vs my 3, but this matchup may be closer than anticipated.
Also... given this is a tie and he has standing preference on me in relation to the tie breaker. I know strongly, strongly endorse Kareems Idea of changing the tie breaker.. immediately. How about most games lost to injury during the week.
I kid I kid.

Re: 2010-2011 BBKL Playoffs Thread
Mik I honestly can't believe you are arguing this..... No reason to finish higher.... If I was facing anything but a low seed this week I'd be eliminated! I had a terrible week this week but because of my higher seeding it looks like I will pull through. If you say there is no incentive to finish higher you obviously do not understand the simple concept of higher seeds win more than lose against lower seeds.
I agree Kareem, top seed just simply winning seems full retard to me as well. Its obviously too late for this year but I say lets change it for next season. I kind of like the Idea of GWG as the tie breaker. Yes its a crap shoot from week to week but GWG's always seem to be massive and dramatic in the playoffs and rewarding the team who had players step up and win for their teams seems like a decent way to decide a week to me. I will do some brainstorming though and come up with some more options.
