If you don't believe he is returning then don't protect him. If tim takes him and dadonov never comes back to the NHL you will have gotten out of expansion for free.Loki wroteCOLONDadonov is even less of a sure thing to return, does seem a waste to have to protect him

So I don't have to waste a P on Kovy, right?

I wouldn't, I don't think they will claim him. Left it pretty lateKapG wroteCOLONSo I don't have to waste a P on Kovy, right?

Vote is 4-3 in CC right now for you not needing to protect him.KapG wroteCOLONSo I don't have to waste a P on Kovy, right?
I'm of the frame of mind that we don't care about things like contract status hence why UFAs need protection so Kovy is no different and him being fake retired doesn't matter and he should be treated like a UFA. For now treat it as he doesn't need protecting and if the two other votes come in saying otherwise then you will be given time to amend your list to protect him.

Re: Protected Lists
It's a tricky subject to figure out because we have what equates to lifetime contracts with players in this league. You own them until you drop or trade them. We use the AAV as salary but term doesn't matter.
With what I have in the database, I could include all players on each roster who have played in an NHL game. It would screw up a lot of your sheets and you would have to reenter your picks.

Re: Protected Lists
What does this exactly mean then? If players not under contract this season (is that 2016-17?). Then those guys are exempt from the draft and it's been re-quoted a bunch of times. Both Dadonov and Kovalchuk did not have contracts this season, despite previously playing enough seasons. I'd say based on this, and the fact it's been posted a bunch of times, that neither of these guys should require protection.dave1959 wroteCOLONShoalzie wroteCOLON
We're honoring the 40/70 exposure rule and we're using the exempt list from CapFriendly. The only things we're not acknowledging is NMC or long term injuries.
Any player that isn't under contract this season (rookie or veteran) is exempt from the draft.
In short, the only players eligible for the draft are any players under contract (for this season) that don't fall under the 1st/2nd year pro rule. (See CapFriendly for the exempt list).
Re: Protected Lists
From the official league announcements thread on April 24th. So this actually wasn't new info.
Bruyns wroteCOLONExpansion Draft Details
All protection lists are due by 7PM EST May 15th, Vegas can announce his team at any time afterwards, but must be announced by May 22nd at 7PM EST.
BBKL will be following the NHL rules for who is eligible and exempt with the exception of UFAs needing protection in our league. The 40/70 rule and minimum player exposure rules are also in play, but UFAs count unlike in the NHL. Kovalchuk due to his NHL experience woulld need protection, but Shipachyov would not who has no professional seasons in N.A. It should be straight forward, but any players that fall into a grey area can be ruled upon by CC if they are eligible or exempt. CapFriendly is the current source we are using and should be referred to if you are unsure on a player.
Positional restrictions:
3 goalies max
Minimum of 8 defensemen (max of 13)
Minimum of 14 forwards (max of 19)
Penalties to teams not meeting exposure requirements will be severe and handled on a case to case basis by the CC, but it is in your BEST interest to be compliant since there is plenty of time to acquire a player to expose if needed.

Just gonna think about a few of the decisions before I officially hand it in though.

am I the only one finding that quote misleading? I mean, players are still under contract with bbkl teams even when they are not with nhl teamsdave1959 wroteCOLONthis was my understanding.koomzzz wroteCOLONdave1959 wroteCOLONShoalzie wroteCOLON

We don't have contracts in our league...you just own the rights to the player. The contract terms are from the NHL but it's not like you have to lose a player when they become a UFA in the NHL.

Re: Protected Lists
This thread clearly went off the rails. I'll be on the road when the deadline passes...honor system with your protected lists on Google. Please no changes after 7. I'll lock each sheet when I get around to it tonight.
My list is the same as I posted on my trading block...but I switched Sbisa to Dumoulin as my 3rd defenseman that I'm protecting.
I appreciate everyone's cooperation throughout this process. If we have to do another expansion draft, we'll make sure a lot of these details are ironed out well in advance next time.
