Oh shit, people will actually have to spend assets getting good players? That sounds awful.
BTW, what I am advocating is what I did. Spend assets to get good players. Don't spend them on shit players. If someone wants a 2nd for a shit player, don't fucking pay it. Pay more to get good long term assets.
So keep the 2nd round pick. Don't pay something you are uncomfortable with, especially for an expiring asset.
Also be willing to live with the consequences of your choices.

Yes. That is exactly what I am saying.

Re: Announcement thread discussion
Correct. You need to expand your volume of good quality assets. You can't do that pissing away picks left and right to meet a high gp. This new number doesn't make it so much easier to field a team lacking gp anyways.Lee wroteCOLONShoalzie wroteCOLONLee wroteCOLONA lower number helps bad teams to remain bad.
And what's the reward for that? There's not always a Connor McDavid or Auston Matthews or Patrik Laine to pull you from the abyss. Ask Will or myself or Cliff about trading away these highly touted prospects for multiple pieces. One draft pick won't help a team but sometimes it takes moving that asset for more assets to strengthen your overall team. And with lottery, finishing last doesn't always mean you pick #1.
In the real world, no one is trading those guys away...in this league, they're only as good as their numbers.
You need a core of players to begin with. I took me 6 years to build a respectable team from absolutely nothing. I was really bad for a really long time. No one else should have to be in a rebuild phase for nearly as long as I was. Perennial basement teams are bad because:
They choose to be
They lack the talent to make their team better
They lack the desire to make their team better
If you want to better your team, you need to:
Scour free agent markets - college players - AHL - CHL over agers that are coming into the league
Spend a lot of time looking for late round steals. Ondrej Palat - Tyler Johnson - David Desharnais - Conor Sheary. What do these names have in common? They are all late round steals by me because I put in the work to find them. There are plenty more from me and others.
DOn't be afraid to look out for your teams best interests. I have a well earned reputation around the league, because I am willing to do what it takes for my team.

So either piss away assets to meet gp and slow down your rebuild or get booted out if the league because the gp requirement is too high.Lee wroteCOLONOkay so what I am saying is finally sinking in?

I guess you're just more harsh than i am (not a bad thing)

What you are proposing is exactly why the educational system is failing. Not enough kids passing? No kids left behind! Lower the passing grade.
Re: Announcement thread discussion
If you don't want to have to pay any assets to add GP then be proactive and not strip down your roster or let it fall to shit over time. Be proactive and keep depth, don't strip down or sell assets to lower your place in the standings. Obviously does not apply to new GMs inheriting garbage but the point is the same.

Re: Announcement thread discussion
That's the problem though. I have no sympathy for those who put themselves in that kind of mess, but sometimes it's inherited. Lee did a great job getting out of that, but is that the exception or the the norm as this league gets more and more competitive with the quality of GM's rising?foofnik wroteCOLONObviously does not apply to new GMs inheriting garbage but the point is the same.

GMs don't give away players for free in this league. they just stash them in the minors.
Re: Announcement thread discussion
Wait around for people to give them to you seems to be the suggestion.
Have no personal responsibility, critical thinking or negotiating skills another.
I can't speak for others, only what I've done.
I've traded multiple young talented assets for young stud NHLers ( example: Duchene, Lindholm)
I've traded aging veterans for young assets ( example: Datsyuk + for Huberdeau +)
Find good players for free that will become NHLers ( example: Sheary, Marchessault)
I've refused to pay anything of note for anyone over 30 as i do not consider that type of player to be a long term asset
The problem is that you are expecting people to give this stuff away for free. You don't want to acknowledge the work, the small incremental upgrades year over year that it takes to build a competitive team.
You need to go out and make your team better
You need to go out and find these assets
I did it. So can you.

Re: Announcement thread discussion
And if not, I still have an open offer out there to swap assets with you for me to rebuild another team.
Re: Announcement thread discussion
Making your team worse to rebuild doesn't matter. What matters is value. So if a person makes trades making their roster worse, they simply need to make sure to retain overall value
Casper, the reason it looks like you need to get 2 more games per week is because 21.4% of all NHl games take place in the last 5 weeks of this season, while 78.4% take place in the other 21 weeks. Therefore, while you do need 2 less games played per week, that is because the nhl games available per week is significantly decreased earlier in the season in comparison with later in the season. Essentially, we are using the ratio rather than a static number, which would be useless.
I do agree that we should probably wait until the NHL schedule for each season is available, and assign the gp target based upon the same percentage each season, rather than simply a number like 850 because of changing schedules.

Re: Announcement thread discussion
how much different can the schedule get really? this year probably an anomaly due to the WCOH but usually the schedule is probably roughly regular form year to year.
the league average for GP through week 21 was 1,022.7... lowest 5: 856, 862, 876, 914, 918. Seven teams reached the season min of 1100 by the end of our regular season. And it appears three will miss that 1100 mark, maybe not, it's close.
I don't think 850 is egregious, but it's certainly easier, IMO.
For comparison's sake. Last year:
league average GP through week 21 was 1,042.1... lowest 5: 856, 866, 929, 939, 955. 8 teams reached 1100. No one missed 1100, closest was 1148.
So really 850 shouldn't be missed, unless teams try to cut it close. I'm ok with this, unless that happens

Re: Announcement thread discussion
Just out of curiosity will the penalty for missing GP be the very picks that the bottom feeders refused to part with in order to land NHL players to meet GP? If this is not the case the only thing that could be 'taken' from them would be actual player assets, or removing them from the league, neither of which really helps the issue at hand.
Not trying to stir up trouble, just trying to follow the logic.

Re: Announcement thread discussion
I propose forfeiture of multiple 1sts. That should be sufficient enough to keep people from flirting with 850.

This was kinda the sentiment I was trying to question. So if the penalty is this harsh, we're in essence telling teams you must trade all of your 2nds etc. in order to avoid having to lose several 1sts. The price of a 4th liner that plays 82 games a year would then be a 2nd right?CasperX22 wroteCOLONI propose forfeiture of multiple 1sts. Re: Announcement thread discussion
I highly doubt the cc would do it, but I would like to see it. You could be brain dead and reach 850 without breaking much of a sweat. If you are sitting close to 850 it is most likely intentional.Sensfanjosh wroteCOLONThis was kinda the sentiment I was trying to question.
