Bobby Mac just said on TSN radio that the Leafs made an offer for Vanek they felt was significantly better than what Montreal gave up.

Minnesota said the same thing.

i heard that yesterday from my brother, (that the leafs and another team made a bigger play for vanek) but the Isles went with Montreals offer.

As nick suggested, it's believed the leafs needed the isles to keep cap.

The rumour was Biggs + Reimer for Vanek
