Just my opinion based on what I've seen and experienced over the years. It's just very rare to find deals that you dont flat out win. I guess that's what all GMs strive for but it's maddening to deal with when you're the other party

Gaborik is definitely < Vanek. I told mik this multiple times before starting negotiations about 1.5 weeks on and off til today. The adds were the problem, and mik wouldn't budge with the adds I wanted him to pay.

no way i make this deal without the picks, even if that is quite some time away and might not amount to anything.
Also, Paul got lucky we didn't complete the deal before the Vanek/Moulson trade, cause otherwise i was not going to add much at all for swapping Gaborik and Vanek.

I guess i just feel that a team in your position doesn't need to make this deal.

Not that i checked CAR's numbers, but i guess that was a factor for Paul in lookin to deal Vanek: replacing Vanek with a similar player while getting a complete lineup moving forward.

I did look at his team and there is no way in hell he should or could have any concern about gp numbers. What should be more concerning is the age of the players. Elias, Gomez, Koivu, Jagr, Boyle, Markov...I totally support rolling with those older guys and feel BBKL cast players off at age 30 but, you also need a balance of some youth. Paul's team is actually half decent. His pick is probably like previously mentioned 5-10 range, solely due to his position in the East. I guess I am looking big picture and that, with that team id be standing pat till around deadline when the contenders are battling out and i maximize return on the older players as rentals which I assume he will do anyway. I see Vanek as one of his better assets with great value. Gabby will always have that injury stigma and off and on type output depending on how he feels i guess. Oh and he is on a team like Columbus, who, despite there improvements, will be a nothing team until they can compete on a consistent level themselves(on the way!)

All I said was that Mik won the deal, never did I say it was a bad deal for you. I've lost plenty of deals according to BBKL that I have personally loved for myself. In the end thats all that matters.

Mik wins IMO, but thought Paul was getting beat up pretty bad in this thread when the only way the deal is a rape is if Pauls pick in 2015 turns into a star years down the road. It's not impossible that Paul gets lucky and the first round talent he picks up in 14 ends up being a better player than the first round talen in 15.

its not about how the picks will turn out as players so much as it is what those very rare and highly sought after picks can be turned into (value wise) come draft day.

Paul, I purposely trolled this deal because you love trolling any deal i have ever made or any block i have ever made. And if you dont think "contenders" pay for high prices for high picks come draft time, you are not paying attention. At the time, I paid dearly for this pick:

To Toronto: Tim Connolly + Joe Colborne + 1st round pick 2011(FLA) + 3rd round pick 2012(BOS) + 5th round pick 2010(CGY)

To Boston: 7th overall 2010 + 3rd round pick 2010(TBL)

With that said you do not have to defend any deal "you" make. It is your team to do as you please. If you werent happy with what you had and wanted to make a move so be it. Who cares what we all think! that is the fun part of BBKL is commenting on all the trades. You can't win, really. You just need to have thick skin. If you dont trade enough, you'll get called on it. Trade too much, there will be a name for that too. Will only trade if you win, some fall under that as well. Not one GM in here is perfect, me included. Every team has different visions, goals and challenges. One has to admire Anton's approach of saying who gives a fuck, I want players I like and will enjoy following.
