21 hours to the deadline the deals began with 1) Fayne was Traded from San Jose Sharks to the Toronto Maple Leafs for a 2nd + Persson

2) The flames grabbed Kobasew from Detroit for a 3rd & 4th rounder

3) Tampa acquired Tyler Myers from San Jose for Colin Wilson, Simon Gagne & a waiver pick

4) Preds bought Wellwood for Nick Johnson & a 3rd from Detroit

5) Minnesota acquired Boucher for a 5th from Montreal

6) Preds acquired Hemsky from Florida at a price of 2013 2nd +2013 2nd + Jokipakka & Steve Mason

7) Ducks dealt a 2nd & Toninato for Hal Gill from Buffalo

8) Avalanche acquired Missiaen & John Mitchell from Vancouver for Ponikarovsky & Mark Stone

9) Leighton from Nashville Predators to Dallas for a 4th 2014

10) Stempniak & Martin Traded from Montreal Canadiens for Boyle Cooke from Pittsburgh Penguins

14) Hossa, Marian Traded from Pittsburgh Penguins for Elias, Patrik in a deal with the Colorado Avalanche


All said 14 trades saw 15 picks traded along with 30 players exchange hands; in addition there were 13 deals done in the 6 days prior to this list. Shiv as expected was the busiest player, however Mik unexpectedly and uncharacteristically was extremely active as well. Mike although asset rich decided to stay somewhat out of the buying process, myself managed to pull the trigger on very few deals of impact as well. Cliff in Anaheim was to some an unexpected buyer - deciding to throw his hat in the ring and see how far into the playoffs his team will go. However the biggest deal of the deadline, was likely just a hockey deal, when Anton & Shep exchanged stud blueliners Doughty & Shattenkirk.

Two trends emerge with the pressure on teams wanting to do see what they can do this year, 1) non-play-off teams selling un-needed players at costs between 2nd-4ths, and 2)contending teams trading away injured assets: Hossa, Larose, Wilson - even if the injuries are small. LAK & BOS absent on the final day of deals, having got their ships in order prior to the storm.

Mik gained the most without losing roster pieces, Cliff you did a similar dance of spending for new pieces without costing you active roster bodies. Shiv shed some concern in Hossa for a very comparable producer in Elisa, he also continued to show his faith in Sidney Crosby by acquiring more minutes on the ice near him (Martin), but the price was steep.

COL, FLA, DET & BUF all managed to sell assets they don't want moving forward, SJS grabbed the biggest name young forward dealt - so maybe the sellers won? That's definitely something that has happened in real life a few times.

biggest loser is also shiv - he traded bigger names to land better stats. (but he knew this)

I also like the DD deal for both anton and shep,,,however, if i were Shep i would have used that 6mil in cap savings to bring in another star or H2H stud.

Problem is, I would have been moving Stars for Stars. I wanted to add a 3-4mil depth player but my futures were too shit to get somebody, and my good players are better than what was available in terms of losing way too much offence for a more well-rounded player when I badly need offence.

So we now have 5 weeks without trading. A great time to focus on evaluating your own team, following playoff runs, acquainting yourself with prospects as well as some discussion regarding next year's trade-deadline.

The shortened season is a tough cookie, is crumbles funny and is a combination of raw dough + burnt/overcooked. Our trade deadline was just 1 week before playoff roster lock - giving teams as much info as possible before having to self-classify as a buyer or a seller. This also minimizes the impact of the trade deadline, in that acquiring for a stretch drive is only a week long. Mind you in our current scoring system, a week can change a lot. Now our trade-deadline will never be exactly like the NHL's - but what are some thoughts as to how this went? There was a notable spike in activity, teams seemed comfortable in their position as a buyer or a seller (or neither), lots of GMs found time for a trade talk. I believe this trade deadline was a good compromise given the options of a short season - which for us was just 9 weeks of info and 1 final week of a shakedown before the real battle begins.

Once our season and playoffs are over, we still have real NHL playoffs to enjoy, and we can begin the tweaks some are getting so anxious to hammer away at. But it's also important to voice your ideas in our off-season, so that we can all actually discuss and find ways to continue improving our league. Of course the BBKL entry draft & waiver draft will make a lot of noise here, as well as NHL free agency & NHL entry draft.

I hear ya Shep, prices for good NHL depth pieces are very high right now - probably a sign of some value swing going on in the BBKL.

I think the deadline is indicative of shifting parity in the league both in terms of the conferences and teams in general. Deadline is a big day for building teams to add value for subsequent seasons and I think the deals that took place really reflect that.

The Dallas Stars are on a trade hiatus.
Except for stupid minor pieces and players I really want.

I think injuries helped create a market for mediocre players. If there's a chance to get out a declining or underachieving player...you do it.

No. Many reasons for that decision, but take some comfort in that there was virtually no period between deadline and end of season - 5 weeks (total) of no trade is a very small freeze, and time I'm sure members can put towards other BBKL aspects.
