I remember reading that we were going to do it on the season's back thread.

Most people in the CC seemed against it.

Although I was against it, I thought we were doing it.

My point from last time still stands. I'm dead against it. Guys can't properly track draft picks. How are they supposed to track cap retentions too?

We track it exactly like we do draft picks.. added in CBS.

Remember that this Retained Cap cannot be traded, and no contract can be split three times.

I assumed that we'd make placeholders but eve still. We have them for picks and some GMs still fail miserably with them.

Planning for the lowest common denominator is silly. Let's hold back society because a few idiots cannot tie their shoes...there is enough safety built into the NHL rules that we too are safe.

supposedly possible, factually unlikely.

And i guess it would contribute to making life more difficult for those who manage the league.

I think we already have other troubles to take care of..

In the future it would also probably lead to cap remains to be inherited by the new GMs entering the league.

The only reason I would see it as messy is cap inherited by new gms. Other than that you just have a placeholder that affects your cap that is non trade-able, seems like a fairly simple concept and not like you'd have to 'keep track of it,' it would just be there. With the 9 mill total limit on it (I think) it could only be abused to a specific extent.

how about only being able to trade 1 seasons worth of cap debt...

1 season at a time. Makes it much more manageable

This is a solid proposition.

ex.
Shawn Horcoffs caphit = 5.5M

3M retained by Ottawa for 2013 season Horcoffs cap hit would be 2.5M

2013/2014 Season his caphit would return to 5.5M

This way new gms would only be stuck with cap debts for that one season and therefore not suffer.

The NHL also allows teams to trade picks further than 2 seasons in advance. we do not because of record keeping.

I would have thought something as simple as tracking draft picks falls under this too, and yet were looking for missing picks almost every entry draft...

perhaps best if we delay it until the off-season.
