I am travelling to Phoneix next week. My wife is coming like 4 days later. She has a BlackBerry Curve and I have an Android smart phone. I want to be able to text/chat and send pics to her and vice versa. Do you guys have experience using any apps for this purpose over wifi so i do not get charged roaming fees? I do not want any extra charges on either phone. As long as we are near a wifi hotspot in PHX we would like to be able to communicate. Any cross platform apps you can recommend?


or....Can i buy a pay as you go simcard while in the States and use it? Or does my phone have to be unlocked? It is through Bell right now...

- If you bought your Android phone through Bell you will likely need an unlock code if you want to use another SIM.
- Depending on your phone you will probably be limited to other CDMA networks in the US, so forget about AT&T and T-Mobile.
- Bell has stupid expensive US roaming rates and shitty "packages". For instance you could pay $40 for unlimited texting in the States for a month, so that's probably not viable.


I'd just do Skype over WiFi. Available for both platforms. That or pickup a prepaid BoostMobile SIM card.

Thanks Mike. I was trying to find unlock codes but the way i figure is i will pay 25 bucks to unlock then pay another 25 bucks for prepaid sim card so there is the 50 dollar package from Bell. I might just do as you say and use skype over wifi. I downloaded Heywire which enables texting over wifi. Pretty coll ap actually. It gives you a US number.

Get WhatsApp (free app on Android I believe) - It is exactly like texting but you can use it over WiFi. And it's cross platform so BB users can message with Android users.

Whatsapp is best for english users. Kaotalk for asians

I know Paul. I sit at a desk and google all day long. I just like talking to you guys since there is no hockey anymore. Dont take offense to the geek comment. I am told I am a geek all the time because i love technology and gadgets. I knew about Whatsapp but wanted some of you other geeks to share your opinion/experience. Dont read into things to much there bud
