Week 13 GWT

Post by Mike »

I'm personally looking forward to the awkward goalie matchup between myself and the Rangers. My Quick and Irving versus Kyle's Kiprusoff and Bernier. We need to make a trade dammit!

He's too scared to make a trade.

I will gladly make that bet official so long as you agree to the same stipulations.

I've made my share of trades. Thanks for caring so much though.

Hopefully I can give you a good run this week.

As for Irving and Bernier. I'm going to hold him until he either becomes a full time back up to Quick (wont happen IMO) or he gets moved to another team.

LOL...Iriving is closer to being a starter in CGY then Bernier is being a starter anywhere. Quick isn't just "kinda" good, he's very good.

LA needs to move bernier for another top 6er if they can. they are a one line team with richards - kopitar - brown playing together and gagne out.

penner + bernier for a top 6 with salary.

+1.

Bernier's a byproduct of just the hype-machine. He could be very good but he could easily not be. Even if he gets traded, there is no reason to think he will just show up and dominate. He could easily have steve mason-like inconsistent seasons for a couple of years before he finds that groove if ever. And in that time-frame, factors like free-agency, 1A/1B scenarios, other top goaltending prospects could easily cloud his role.

That being said, he is a very good prospect. But his likelyhood of being elite vs his likelyhood of being a career backup shouldn't be overestimated.

Nah, Bernier is a legit goaltender. He could step onto alot of teams and start today, he is more than just a "prospect" Shiv. He has dominated the AHL, and looked great as a backup in the NHL the last two seasons.

He could step into a lot of teams and start - Fine.

But people make it sound like he is ready to dominate at the NHL level - That is where it is necessary to point out that he is still a prospect (albeit a fine prospect).

Goalies don't just make it to the NHL and dominate. Even guys like Carey Price struggled for a couple of years.

Bernier didn't just make it to the NHL...He has been backing up for two years, he is nothing like a prospect, even in the context you presented. Dominate is a strong word, but I believe Bernier will do really well once given the opportunity to start full time, he is the real deal.

But even more importantly... The Kings DON'T need to move him... having a reliable backup who is RISING in value is just smart. See MTL with their old duo, Canucks with theirs, and what WSH just did. Until it's a UFA situation there's no reason to weaken the most important position on the ice.

And since when is the goalie martket any good? Someone find me a trade since the lockout for a GOOD scoring forward for a goalie????

Not to mention 3 million total in net for a couple years.

Irving isn't closer to starting than Bernier is "anywhere". Give me a break.

Is he just going to leap frog Karllson? What about Kipper? Is he just gonna get the nod over Kipper who is locked in for a few more years IIRC? Don't see Calgary moving him any time soon.

Where are people saying or "making it sound like" he is ready to flat out dominate at the NHL level? I think lots of people say that he is ready for a starting job in the NHL. Minus being rushed earlier in his career for a bit, LA has taken the slow route with him. They've had him honing his game at the AHL and NHL level for multiple seasons each now. The kid is ready for a chance. It's just my bad luck that he won't get one in LA.
