every new years day myself and a group of 5-6 others go up to a frozen lake here on the north island, clear a nice little patch of ice and play the game old-school
love this aspect of OUR game.

Played hockey my whole life, but there is something special about playing shinny with friends/family on the lake. I grew up playing shinny on the lake in front of my parents house. My dad would cut a hole in lake with a chain saw, and then we would flood the rink with pails of water. Best rinks ever.

Thats pretty cool. That is the same way this event kind of started. Now it is called the World Pond Hockey Championship. Plaster Rock, NB is basically a Hamlet until this one weekend a year. Its pretty friggin cool. From the history page: We now have teams representing every province in Canada; 35 U.S states and a total of 15 countries from around the globe that have skated in Plaster Rock.
Look at the rinks...insane. This idea was started as a way to raise money to get the areas first rink in 2002.
