Penn State - Fall of an Institution

Anyone following this?

This has to be the most horrific case of child abuse in the history of sports. I don't think I have ever read about a case where every single superior blatantly ignored allegations of child molestation/acts of paedophilia for several years. The Toronto Maple Leafs organization didn't foster that kind of environment, but there were suspicions that Ballard was aware of it -- don't think any proof was given here. But the Grand Jury summary leaves me with the impression that this man was allowed to roam free for several decades...

This keeps getting weirder and weirder. Penn State cancelled today's pre-game conference because there was a risk that Paterno was going to answer questions about Sandusky's abuse. Some seem to think that Penn State is trying to muffle Paterno, but they are "planning" his deparature -- which makes me think he might have been protecting Sandusky the entire time.

Looks like Paterno and his entourage are trying to set up an off-campus press conference right now. Holy shit. What a train wreck.

Paterno fired by board just hours after saying he'd retire at end of the season.

i may be in the minority here, but webster's might as well place a photo of paterno next to the word "scapegoat" in the next edition.

ive read the grand jury report and paterno is getting the fucking shit end covered of the stick hard.

so let me get this straight - a 28 year old man actually SEES sandusky having sex with a little boy and instead of going to the police, tells paterno. paterno having received a third party account of the situation immediately tells his superiors, which is in my opinion, EXACTLY what he's supposed to do. it's not as if paterno himself saw this happening, this is third party information. superiors, who's decision this inevitably becomes, decide not to do anything about it. and yet, we have paterno fired, his face plastered over every media outlet while this 28 year old man keeps his job and the superiors quietly resign.

Agreed. He got thrown under the bus in this situation, it wasn't an active cover up by him. Should he have done more? You bet. But to get scapegoated like this seems ridiculous. To be honest its because of the morale superiority Paterno had for so long, for this to happen under his watch is why hes being scapegoated. He told his superiors and campus security I believe, the cover up was done by them. If they conducted an investigation it would of been done confidentially, he told people he trusted based on a 3rd party account he didn't know the outcome of that investigation. If anything its his fault for trusting them I suppose. The other side of that is he should of known with a guy thats been around that long..
