just trading away soooo far away future when your current roster is questionable -AT BEST-
.... incredibly poor planning... selling low... this low is incredibly bad asset management

Agree, you got to have at least a plan and reason for saling those picks wich I don't see in thise deal.
Poor management.

Mike, Arian, Bryan and Hong are all doing excellent jobs, Mike is suceeding through stockpiling picks, and the others are doing so by sticking to the plan and hanging onto all their key prospects. That being said Detroit isn't rebuilding, they are re-tooling, the above is a trade I've made 100 times, and will continue to make, nice job Detroit, 2012 is a long time away, you can turn it around by then.

there is one other person who has gone un-noticed for his obvious efforts in making a substantial bubble+ team. Mashley. He has turned him team in a complete 180 imo and deserves some kind of recognition.

When I trade my own 1st round picks, it's with the thought in mind that I want that pick to be as low in the round as possible...I want to compete. In my spot, I think more than half would've worked on gutting my roster and started over...like what Mike has done, which I compliment him on doing. I'm two things...a bit impatient and not as savvy on the draft. I'll move picks because they can have more use to other teams unless I know darn well what I'm getting in a prospect. I'll admit my limits on following players prior to them reaching the NHL...I don't have the time or resources to do so. Esposito is a risky guy but still only 21 and he's sadly now my best prospect. I'm not a chicken salad out of chicken shit guy like others but I think I'm hanging in.
Year-to-year I don't want to just float around with picks and prospects with hopes of competing eventually. I want to try to get pieces that can help me win sooner rather than later...which is another illustration of my impatience. You're more likely going to see my leave the league rather than sit through a year or two of getting my teeth kicked in during the season so I can sit back and look at what I could have later rather than what I could have now. I'm going to shuffle the deck rather than discard. I'm going to hope my long term prognosis improves as I go forward but I still want to make a run at the postseason each year.

I might be reading this wrong but are you blatantly saying if you don't win you are going to leave the league because that is not cool, I am sorry Leafs fans I have to do this but that is because you guys will have the answer quick but how many years since the Leafs have made the playoffs and the team didn't just fold and leave. You keep fighting, it is your choice how you want to build your team but like I said maybe I read this wrong.

If I had to wait until like 2015 to start winning in this league I think my head might explode.

The reality is though that some of these guys have done such a fantastic job at building that it might be the reality of things turning around for you unless someone starts to sell off and you benefit from it, my team isn't bad and I will probably make the playoffs but the cup no way compared to at least 4 of the teams in the east unless I am lucky I don't stand a chance. Like I said ok it is great to make the playoffs but the ultimate goal is to win it all or at least maybe a playoff series and there are teams even mine that could still be a year or two at least from winning a series. I am just saying I don't like the attitude you stick it out that is why you wanted to be in this league. I mean no doubt some new guys wish we could have did things our way with the original roster but that is just not reality of it. You chose to take over a roster now you work with it even if it takes 3 or 4 years.

You could read it as that but I'm going to say I'll quit if I don't win but that's not it. I'll make all efforts I can compete for the playoffs every year. My philosophy for this year is make a run at the playoffs and if I'm going to fall a bit short, then I sell off some older players and other useful pieces to some contending teams for some future pieces and then try again next year. I'm in more of a roll-over mode with my players rather than start from the ground up and wait for the crops to grow. I'll be a mixed bag of older and younger players...whatever mix that helps me hang in with most of the league. I'm some time away from being on Scott or Shiv or Kareem or Steve's level of having a complete team from top to bottom that can win now but that's what I'm striving for.

Yeah, that's pretty much my feelings on the matter. I'm for having a fire sale if my team is going to fall short but I'm not going to completely rebuild and wait a year or two for guys to grow up and contribute.

Oh, I wish I would've gotten in here from the start and had all the pieces the Wings had to start with...ie--pre-trade of Zetterberg and Hossa. If I had all that firepower when I got here and I wasn't sitting near the basement when I joined in November, I probably wouldn't have been so trade-crazy and tried to re-shuffle my roster and hope for some improvement. My philosophy would've been a lot of different if I started with a different group of players and I would've felt the same way if I joined today and took over any other team. If I didn't have much to start with, I'd work on picking up a piece here and a piece there and work my way up. I probably wouldn't go the patience route and wait on prospects to develop while my team took up a permanent residency in the cellar.

lol, start looking for a good head container then.. cause, apparently, free agency has been definitively discarded, and once you'll be able to compete in 2014 you will find me there ready to kick your ass.
