the Euro comes to N.A.
the Euro comes to N.A.
hey guys,
as a couple of you already know, i'm getting ready (well, desperately trying to) to leave on Friday night for a long trip to North America with my GF.
October was an easy choice: only chance to get long holidays, fall colours in New England, Canada..
and most importantly the unique chance to watch live NHL hockey in NA!
the drawback is leaving just when the league is starting again after a loooong off-season.. i'm not sure when i'll be able to connect, and i'll have my GF on my neck anyway.. (she already has to attend a few hockey games, i doubt she could stand me wasting time on the net looking for fantasy hockey updates... but i'll try once in a while.. lol, take a long shower my darling!)
so, after submitting my roster within friday, moving forward i'll try to update my lineups for each of the following weeks, even if i doubt i'll manage to get many updates on stuff.. hope to not mess around and to get some mercy from admins&CC along the next month!
if you don't get your PM answered, you know why
the trip will last from October 1st through October 30th.
I could attend as many as 5 hockey games;
the sure bets are:
COL @ OTT on 13th,
Ott 67's home game on 14th,
NYR @ VAN on 18th
also probable are:
CHI @ WSH on 2nd (exhibition)
TBY @ BOS on 8th
first stage is Washington, then NYC, Boston, Montreal, Ottawa, Vancouver, San Francisco (->parks).
i know most of you are from the Toronto area, but if anyone has any tips and recommendations, please add them, they are more than welcomed! i'll try to give a look at this thread after leaving as well.
For example, i'm going to drive a couple of days through New England, but i don't know which would be the most scenic itinerary to follow in Autumn.. any suggestions?
oh, and just in case i fail to post afterwards.. enjoy the start of the season guys!

Hey man, have fun ... lived in the bay area (SF) the first 28 years of my life - tourist musts for San Francisco:
Pier 39/Fisherman's Warf, Golden Gate/Presidio area, Union Square (mostly shopping) - along w/ the trolleys, China Town, ... Golden Gate park is alright too. Coit Tower is sort of "meh" but it has the wild parrots ... too bad you can't catch a Giants game while you're there - great park. (hate the baseball though).

nice..sounds like an amazing trip. Out of curiosity, why are you skipping Toronto? I guess it's just a smaller, less hectic version of NYC. Montreal will be fun..has a little bit of a euro feel to it. Vancouver is probably one of the prettiest cities in Canada. San Francisco is also one of my favourite cities..lots of amazing restaurants there!!

have a blast, Mik!
Re: the Euro comes to N.A.
Also, not sure what days you're in NYC..but playoff baseball in Yankee Stadium would be an experience (will be pricey but probably worth it!). Maybe catch an NFL game as well in NYC, San Fran, or Foxboro MASS if the date align? Something worth considering if you're a sports fan in general!

I'd skip toronto too, its shit lol. Montreal and Vancouver are must sees and if you have time Vancouver Island, it makes Van look like the ugly red headed step child of Canada and that is saying a lot.
Re: the Euro comes to N.A.
thx guys!
and moreover, too bad your stupid Sharks live for a road trip like the day before i'll arrive in California!
damn NHL schedule.
i actually have some relatives in San Leandro so hopefully they will have some good advices about that.
One thing i'm wondering is, anyone know good (and not pricy) accomodations around the Yosemite park?
i have not figured out yet where to sleep there..
we actually thought to dedicate one full day to it, but i'm wondering how much (and what) we should be able to see in only one day
btw, pacific rim doesn't seem a real option in late October because of weather.
if you know the island pretty well, what should we target in Autumn? of course i'm talking about outdoor activities and landscapes.
thx in advance,
and keep 'em coming guys!
thx for the tips Tony! too bad you're not there anymoreTony wroteCOLONHey man, have fun ... lived in the bay area (SF) the first 28 years of my life - tourist musts for San Francisco:

well yeah, it seems to be less of a 'Canadian' city, more similar to other US cities so we thought it was not a must see... and tickets for Maple Leafs are expensive and hard to get so i didn't push for itbcool wroteCOLONnice..sounds like an amazing trip. vancouver island is definitely one of our targets, however i've now realized how big it is and how much time it takes to travel through it.shooker wroteCOLON I'd skip toronto too, its shit lol. Re: the Euro comes to N.A.
You'll have a hard time even catching a game for two in Toronto anyways... all sold out!
Re: the Euro comes to N.A.
*shrug* It's a lot easier to get tickets in Toronto than everyone thinks. I can usually get a few sets of seats during the mapleleafs.com member pre-sale. Additionally, scalpers are always happy to take face value (or less) just after puck drop.H MART wroteCOLONYou'll have a hard time even catching a game for two in Toronto anyways... all sold out!

Re: the Euro comes to N.A.
Tickets are hard to get in Vancouver too. Scalpers are dirty buggers here, try and switch tickets on you or double sell w/o the stub, lots of reports of fake tickets as well. Just a heads up to be patient and careful.
Vancouver & Vancouver Island are amazing, but I also like Toronto, so... IMO all 3 are different; none have a even slightly european feel to them.
I'd recommend flying harbour air (http://www.harbourair.com) at least one way between VanIsle and Vancouver, and then BC Ferries the other. They fly float planes (turbo-otters) which makes the trip really short (like 15 minutes, instead of the Ferry which kills a huge chunk of time), and it's a beautiful view from the plane.
One day on Vancouver Island can be spent driving, it's roughly 6-1/2 hours to do the entire length. If you only have 1 day, pick 1 of the cities. Victoria is the obvious choice, however Naniamo and Campbell River are worth visiting as well -> up north of CR or the west face of the island (***Tofino***) if you'd like a more rustic taste of the West coast.
shoot me a PM if you have any specific questions, happy to share my thoughts & opinions.

IMO you need at least two days but if you have only one day I suggest victoria. Faceu is right about Harbour air, the flight in is gorgeous so wait for a sunny day and you won't regret it. Tofino is incredible and the storms that will be happening in Oct will be amazing to see and it is offseason so rates are super cheap there. I also agree the ferry is a must. Usually you will at least see some porposes or dolphins but it is also common to see some whales. In specific Orca and Humpback whales. If you can squeeze that in and victoria, you will get the best Vancouver Island experience one can get in 2 days.

Nobody cares about the hippies in BC man
Re: the Euro comes to N.A.
LOL backlash from me saying toronto is shit? I'd try travelling if I were you, its eye opening. believe it or not there are better places than southern ontario lol, better places than BC too but with your simple mind I suggest baby steps.H MART wroteCOLONNobody cares about the hippies in BC man

Re: the Euro comes to N.A.
lol yea haha I offended him pretty good. I remember someone telling me that I couldn't take a joke. Toronto isn't even my home town, let alone it being my home country (only by citizenship). I've traveled enough. It really isn't even about which place is better looking of a scenery LOL. It's really really funny though when a city gets ostricized for whatever reason for being what it is.
Re: the Euro comes to N.A.
To me toronto is just another city and cities are generally the same in every country unless you know someone to show you what is unique about it. Like Madrid, Milano even Lisboa all fall into the same criteria for me. I suggested Montreal/Quebec City and Vancouver/Victoria because these are all very obvously unique cities and you realize that as soon as you arrive. If he has time there is some beautiful stuff in ontario I just dont suggest Toronto if he is crunched for time, better places to see.Mike wroteCOLONI don't understand why it's so trendy to hate on Toronto.shooker wroteCOLONLOL backlash from me saying toronto is shit? I do agree the hate on Toronto is unfair as people hate it without even going there lol. I dont really understand why, something to do with how the west feels left out of any decision making politically is the only reason i could think of for hate to start but most generally hate with no reason at all.
I only made that comment because of the doucher comment KMART made there.
