Rebuilding teams really need to take note. Granted, Kareem has way more assets than most competing teams. But this trade happens simply because Kareem does his homework and knows Shook is over the cap to make the right kind of deal. Most "builders" do everything in their power to avoid a guy like Alfy. But Kareem will most definitely be able to land more than Forbort once the season starts. And the deal helps Shook a lot too.

I bet Shook approached way more GMs and asked "Hey. Interested in Alfy?" The immediate response from such rebuilders was probably "Nope. Too old." But when you look at the value Kareem had to give up it's a no-brainer for any kind of team. All you have to do is wait and reflip during the season - a concept that eludes many rebuilders (not referring to you Chris ).
