Draft picks are the most overrated thing in this league by a mile.KapG wroteCOLONWhaT mike got was a ateal of a deal

Waiting on draft picks and letting your system grow works well too...but tearing down and rebuilding isn't as easy as most people seem to think. Going for NHLers when you know what they ARE, instead of risking the incredibly over-stated odds of getting a top line player anywhere in the draft. Even if you are right and the player is top line stuff...it's a couple of years away, and by then it's unlikely the drafter still holds that players rights.
Re: Trade: NJD/TOR - I Dunno Why I'm So Stupid
So then why is my deal with Kareem a bad one? I'm gaining two potential starters - one who might start this year - and a high-upside defenseman. So in other words, Kareem got a defenseman whose upside is in some doubt, another prospect defenseman drafted from 2011, and a 1st round pick for 2012.
So all in all, I gained upside, a stronger statistical probability that all my players will pan out, and I gained value in a trade where I selected two goaltenders in good shape to become back-ups to starters within a year or less, but I "lose". Interesting how the agenda works around here.

When you have stars/good NHLers you can stock the cupboard any time you want to.

And when you don't, you look for ways to get them. I.e., Ryan McDonagh, Connor Murphy, 2012 1st Round Pick for Dustin Tokarski, Allen York, Martin Marincin.
Re: Trade: NJD/TOR - I Dunno Why I'm So Stupid
My comment had nothing to do with your trade Chris. IMO a good trade is a good trade, regardless of the team, now there are times when quality is better then quantity, and times when you need the #. However in regards to prospects, there is a 'hockey forum' belief in drafting, that simply doesn't transfer over to building a good team. Could get lucky and have most of your top prospects get in the NHL, could get REALLY lucky and have them in top 4 and top 6 roles (D/F) and starting/backups roles but, nothing is as sure a bet as the NHLer who is already producing or at least playing well (# sometimes trail the play).
I'm not saying Tokarski won't pan out, good WHLer that boy was.

No one is saying you have to actually use the 1st to draft someone. But surely there are better players to use 1sts + on. Dupuis is like 32 and besides shtoi, doesnt realy bring any monster h2h stats to the table.

Yeah I had Dupuis last season, I ultimately moved him around the deadline because he wasn't good enough to roster on a contending team. There is no way in hell he is worth a 1st rounder in 2012, and a second...No way.
