my wireless is fucked. it keeps switching to "local only" every 5 minutes and stays like that for 30 seconds or so and then re-connects.
im literally sitting next to the router and modem and it's still happening. when i plug directly in using an ethernet cord, i dont have this problem.
some times ill go hours with it working fine, then theres times like tonight where i cant stay connected for more than 5 mins at a time.

Do you have another wireless device to test and see if it is the router or the Network card in laptop? Should give you a good starting point.

that's where it gets really confusing.
my roommate is also on the wireless and he says it does happen to him but very rarely. whereas mine can happen every 5 mins depending on the day.

hmmm. Do you have a router provided by your ISP or is it one you purchased? Have you tried reloading the drivers your your network adapter(wifi) on the laptop or checked to see if there is a software or firmware update available for your model?

it's vista probably... I've used it for longer than anyone I'm sure.
The problem mainly lies on ur ISP rather than hardware imo, unless you have concrete walls or have shit loads of interfering signals. Some people need to configure their IP address to static rather than dynamic, because dynamic address is too unstable, thus kicking you out of internet service and looking for another IP to assign you/reconnect you to the same IP so frequently.
My 2 cents
