Buds Board Keepers League

Now, these may be a little controversial and some might not agree but I don't care. My 2 BBKL championships will block my vision (yes, stolen from Patrick Roy.. kinda ). I'm going to give tips on how to build a winner in this league to hopefully help some of you guys. These tips I will fully endorse and actual strategies I use myself. Use them if you'd like to and feel free to ask me on msn to clarify anything you do not understand.

Tip #4: My Approach, in a Nutshell

I was talking with a certain GM and explain the way I believe you win BBKL. Now, you can take it for what it is or try my approach and see what happens.. I don't fucking care. But here's my approach, summed up in 5 brief points:

a) If you have it, spend it - there is absolutely no point sitting on good prospect or good picks. When you have these pieces, use them to make your NHL team better. Also, timing is everything. What I've noticed in BBKL is GMs are more likely to move their quality NHLers the cheapest during the NHL season. At this point, they've either realize that the mountain is too high to climb or they just aren't good enough. This is the time to pounce!

b) Be Pro-active - don't be afraid to bug the shit out of someone. The GM who works the hardest and spends the most wins almost every single time!

c) If you have quality NHLers, the cupboard's always full - the title speaks for itself. If you have stars like Toews, Datsyuk, Crosby, Malkin, Keith, Green, etc.. you can trade these players for any fucking pick or prospect you fucking want. Duh!

d) Don't be afraid to overpay - if you're upgrading the roster, overpaying is almost better then paying fair value. Overpaying does a few great things such as, 1) builds a good relationship with your trading partner for the next set of negotiations, 2) it shows the league that you're willing to pay a premium for the player(s) you want and, 3) you are usually only adding a pick or 2 and/or a prospect or 2 to "overpay".. like I've said before, overpaying is a matter of opinion. Don't be a pussy.. and...

e) Get the best bang for your buck - when making a deal, always keep in mind the term and cap hit of the player. I mean, when building a team, if you have 3 or 4 big ticket players, it'll be harder to fill other holes with quality pieces will remaining under the cap. This is probably the toughest thing to do in fantasy hockey because guys on the cheap are usually the most expensive to trade for, but with patience and finding the right time to pounce, it's definitely possible!

So, these are my 5 rules I live by.. so integrate them in to your plan.. or continue to lose.

Regardless of Scotts approach to winning - which needs to be defined, as what has he won? Our respect? Money? Perhaps an extra banner from Shep - the league is very much IMO about having fun pretending to be an NHL gm. Although I was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs, I had a wicked good time these past 2 seasons. My team is almost entirely full of players I like to watch and/or have followed for some time; essentially building a group of my favourite players, while maintaining a prospect pipeline as a
good NHL gm would - now if I can do that while making a deeper playoff push.



Talking hockey is the best part of the BBKL.

Nick, I've won the right of brag.. that's it! But seriously, the point of this league is having fun.. no matter how you build your team, no matter where you finish, you should have a good time doing so. But if you want to win.. IMO, this is the BEST approach.

Also, we all know you'll part with most of your prospects during the season to improve.. there's no doubt in my mind because you realize that if you do, you can easily replace them in the offseason. If not, I doubt you'll win.. if you do, paint me silly.

yeah getting engage in this league makes me watch more hockey.. i still remember at the start of the league i ask scott who taylor hall is...hahaha
and i enjoy watching all the games my guy plays in... and enjoy hockey as a whole much more than before..
but still this is a very fun league to be in and i want to win too.. of coz there is scott's way which imo is the most effective way becoz we can trade a player in and out n number of times.. but for me i don't have that much time i prefer to stay the way it is...hahaha.. and yes i think as long as u don't keep changing approaches in building your team, you will have a chance (playoffs have higher luck factor than in the season)

btw is it more fun if the players that have no-trade/no movement clause in real life have the same effect in our league?

Neat concept...but impossible to enforce, no? How would we decide if a player is willing to waive? Already lots out of our hands regarding contracts, NTC just become too much I think.

Is anyone gonna argue with this or what?

i came up with some ideas for it.. but my head can't spin at night.. it will be more competitive with NTC/NMC in it.. but of coz it will be abit complicated for the league to take and for admin to register...

I was joking.. there's a history of FA discussion in this league that wasn't accepted too nicely. I had a proposal more then half written up and then the league almost imploded so I just stopped.
