More along the line of accumulating assets. Parayko is a good piece.

yeah Yegor was surprising. I picked him with a 6th a couple years ago and he went undrafted, then CBJ took him in the 1st in his second year of eligibility.
Don't see that often, where he is picked in 2nd year and makes the team quick.

I can see the Mik comparison with Matthew's roster...but more from the standpoint of having to move out players once their salaries become too high. Mik has to deal with the "second contract bump" with his young players and it forces out established vets. The flat cap really has forced teams to trade away good players with higher salaries sooner than some would want. Matthew has thinned out his prospects and picks in recent years to ascend with his NHL level talent.
You want a guy like Parayko on your roster but you can't have a roster full of $6/$7/$8 million players. Move out those guys and backfill with young players on cheaper...that's the goal in my mind. It's that "renewable/sustainable roster" model I speak highly of and I want to eventually attain.
I almost want to become asset-rich ahead of winning because you really can't control the results on the ice but you can control the assets you have. Winning will happen organically when you have the right pieces and they all hit at the right time.

In previous year, that's a fair criticism. You don't see me chasing a fringe wild card spot now. It takes time to undo some of the mistakes in previous years. I've probably had a bottom 10 team for a few years...I was just in denial.
The fork in the road for me was the Auston Matthews draft. I steered into to adding to my team but it amounted to nothing and I was too stubborn to give up on it. If I stuck to drafting and building, I could've end up with a pretty team just based on some of my past drafts.
