Draft Discussion

Post by Shoalzie »

First step is done. Every team has a copy of the expansion "Protection" sheet as part of your Google sheets from this season. It's the second tab next to "Picks".

All teams are participating in our expansion draft include Vegas.

A few things of note:

1. The sheet itself is very simple to use. Just check the red boxes next to the player's name to protect them. You'll have a running total of how many you protect from each position at the top of each column.

2. The two protection list options are automated, you don't check those boxes. As you select players, the lists will populate on their own. If your selections don't meet either of the list options, neither list will populate.

3. Protect only 1 goaltender.

4. The exempt lists aren't complete. You will see players on your sheets that won't need to be protected. I'll try to complete the exempt lists either today or tomorrow.

5. Since Vegas is exempt from the NHL expansion draft and not listed on CapFriendly, I need to determine which players of their roster would be exempt from the draft.

6. The 27/54 GP status won't be 100% complete until the end of the NHL regular season. I'll collect the final GP totals from this year and put that into my spreadsheets.

7. The green check boxes signify which players currently meet the 27/54 GP rule.

It's really too bad Vegas didn't play more of their young players earlier on, making them eligible in here.

What does Vegas NHL expansion have to do with our expansion? Just the list of players to determine if eligible or not?

CapFriendly doesn't list their players' eligibility because they're exempt from the actual expansion draft. NHL Seattle will only draft 30 players. Our Seattle will pick from all 31 teams. Vegas will participate in our draft.

Cody Glass is exempt for the same reason Owen Tippett is exempt (also from the 2017 draft). Both had their ELC slide to the 2019-20 season; their pro seasons don't count until then. Tippett played only 7 games in '17-18 but since his contract slid, his clock didn't start until '19-20. Glass never made his NHL debut until '19-20.

Everyone can start making trades again after our finals wrap up on Thursday night. We haven't finalized a date for the protection lists to be finalized but there will be a good-sized window for everyone to make moves. The expansion draft will happen in late June. We're leaving it up to Seattle to pick a final date.

I've mentioned before, the GP for 2020-21 won't be finalized until the last regular season game is played. Calgary-Vancouver is scheduled to play games on the 16th, 18th and 19th. The NHL still hasn't decided how they're going to handle that with the start of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

I have a start of a sheet for Seattle to make their picks. The other 31 teams have a protection sheet on their Google sheets to use. After our trade freeze is lifted, I'll update the rosters on Google so your protection lists will reflect any moves you make prior to the protection list deadline.

I'm going to shoot for having the next season's sheets ready by the end our of entry draft...late July.

why would they choose to do that and look like an amateurish league? at worst, they could play them and start the playoffs before VAN and CGY are done.

That’s true. If they do play it I hope other than letting guys play who could reach some bonuses, give their minor leaguers some play. Never mind the league, I can guarantee you none of those players want to play those meaningless games after the year everyone has had.

The way it looks, everyone except the North will start this weekend...the North playoffs will begin after the Flames-Canucks play their final games. Bruins-Capitals Game 1 is announced for this Saturday night.

Honestly, that's good that they're playing these games out because it would effect the lottery standings.

a couple of things about the protection sheet:

- for some reasons the first player I protect won't show up in the first column (Barkov right now)

- under the exposure requirement column, I don't see the row for goalies, I think NHL teams have to make 1 available as well. Did we amend on the NHL rules for that matter?

- is Mittelstadt indeed exempt? not sure why him and many other players aren't highlighted in green at capfriendly either ("Players who meet or are projected to meet the exposure requirements are highlighted in green")

- nitpicking but.. my brain keeps telling me the 'Available Players' row on top should be green rather than red, considering the protected players are flagged in red, and the ones who meet requirements to be available are flagged in green :)

How will those playoff games affect the fantrax scoring? Are they auto excluded because it's a playoff game?

Well, our finals ends after Thursday night so it won't matter for us.

If you're in another league that is playing out with the Canucks-Flames games...they would be smart enough to only count the regular season. I can't speak for Fantrax of course.
