Could someone clear this up for me. Rosters are active in the offseason in the NHL? Like Kennedy being waived?

I don't think teams have to declare their 23-man or 22-man rosters yet...I think it's flexible until the start of the season when guys actually have to be sent down unless they're signed to strictly minor league deals.
I can't tell you why Kennedy was waived by Buffalo...it's an odd move. He's waived supposedly to be bought out but I thought the buyout period had passed. He had a $1 million contract...why not just wait to trade him? Like I said, they don't have to decide on their 23-man roster now.

As far as I know it is the first time this has ever been done to a player after his award being signed. But as for Buffalo Regier has said in interviews on the radio that they expected him to get around 600,000 and that was what they planned for, with signing Niedermayer and guys like ennis and gerbe stepping up they had an abundance of forwards and felt they had to part ways with him because they wanted to address defense. Don't get me wrong I think for a million I enjoy watching Kennedy and with him being local and a lot of people knowing him it was shocking.
