PENGUINS TRADING BLOCK

Oh wait, we can't trade even though the NHL trade deadline is a week away still!
Can someone explain the rationale of this for me please?
-Injuries in the olympics could not be accounted for (e.g. Tavares, Zetterberg)
-Injured players before the olympics had their futures uncertain but now have had time to heal. It was still too much risk with the deadline and teams moved players for discounts (E.g. Moulson)
-Teams who made trades for cap reasons have had their circumstances completely change creating more or less cap room (E.g. Letang for Mike, Zetterberg for Mik)
This is something I usually entrust the CC with but having our deadline almost a month before the NHL deadline doesn't add up.
I hope we don't do this again...

I have. I'm not opening a can of worms for no reason.
I'm opening it up because I think this season proves why this method is completely wrong. "Good" GMing should allow GMs to adapt. Not be at the mercy of a trade deadline that is a month earlier.
I look at Mik's team or even Mike's team and they got COMPLETELY screwed. Mike has depth so it doesn't look as bad. But you don't think it's easier to beat him without Letang?
I know I am not the only one who feels this way. Multiple GMs have messaged me on Skype to talk about this in the last few days.

That sounds like an argument against a trade deadline in general, not one against the timing of a deadline.
tell the other GMs to use their typing ability here on the forum, where discussion can take place & their opinion heard. that is exactly what led to this deadline.

Our playoffs are a lot sooner than the NHL ... having the deadline less than a week before the playoffs eliminates the possibility of GMs making the tough decisions to buy or sell. I was not one of the advocates for playoff teams being able to trade during the playoffs ...

Yea, this year is an oddity. A lot of question marks can arise in Olympic year. If our playoffs were the same time as NHL playoffs you would have a point Shiv but we have to pro-rate what it would be for us in reg season for fantasy purposes. A lot can happen, including injuries, goalie trades, etc...

I think you guys are missing my point...
1. In an Olympic year, why wasn't our trade deadline this week? We could have still preserved the "realism". This was a mistake and shouldn't happen again.
2. Why are we obsessed with the realism in this particular circumstance? If our trade deadline is in week 20 every year, what's wrong with that? It will likely be before the NHL deadline but still not so far out.
3. I think there needs to be a philosophical debate here. Is it really bad GMing by Columbus for example if Ryan Miller gets traded to St. Louis? CLB has the Halak-Elliott tandem. How is a GM supposed to forecast that trade? For the sake of keeping our trade deadline similarly distanced from our playoffs, we are handcuffing GMs for no reason.

Why even bother having a trade deadline?

I'm not sure if you're trolling but I think the option of having our trade deadline at the end of week 21 needs to be seriously discussed.

You have valid points Shiv but you are also missing some other angles. Just like the real NHL, GM's should have to make decisions on whether or not they are sellers, buyers or stay neutral in a timely manner that is relative to the start of our playoffs. I agree that there could definitely be some handcuffing problems arise. I just dont know how else to deal with it. In a regular year the same issue could happen as we have always had our deadline before NHL, have we not? Injuries can occur after our deadline as well. Using the Olympics is not really valid, imo.

What happens if you are in playoffs and your starting goalie goes down and you dont own the backup? nothing...

I think this is a situation where "emulating" the real world is not practical at all...
In the real NHL, the trade deadline is well in advance of the playoffs, yes. But in the real NHL, the teams also have full control of their destiny. How can BBKL GMs be expected to keep up with a goalie trade or forecast it? It has NOTHING to do with GM skill because every GM is literally at the mercy of their real life tandem counterpart with no room to adjust. In the real NHL, if BUF trades Ryan Miller for Jake Allen and Enroth sees all the starts, BUF will still have a goalie for all games. Columbus in BBKL won't.
This need to "emulate" is at the core of BBKL, I get it. But sometimes, using some basic logic says that we need to be smarter. Another example is our scheduling. We don't play division opponents more than other in-conference opponents. We use common sense there because we're almost forced to (i.e. having 14 weeks taken up by in-division match-ups would kill any other match-ups lol. There are times when doing the same in other situations where we are not "forced" should be considered okay.
Also - btw. To those who are going to make the point that having the trade deadline earlier forces GMs to manage their team better to account for injuries <---- I agree with this point. BUT the negative of the tandem impact on a playoff team is FAR WORSE than the positive impact of accounting for injuries. One encourages better GMing, yes. But the other destroys a season's full of work and the integrity of a season.

You have some points....
What happens to a team that is trying to meet GP for goalies and there team acquires a new starter? Does the team still have there pick penalized for not meeting GP?
I can see pros and cons to both sides of the coin. I know some of the "whatiffs" are subjective but in reality, for planning purposes, the situations should be hammered out.
Maybe there is a goalie trading exemption post trade that is allowed between affected parties? just throwing ideas....Goes back to my request to have emergency injury replacements midweek during playoffs. Thought that was a good topic but the strain on admin in CBS was not good. Maybe we will have more control in Fantrax?

Not going to make everyone happy, there was a majority feeling last time that our deadline was too close to the start of the playoffs -> aka no stretch drive, no need to acquire depth, no tough calls. The year before had some of the same comments, though not to the same extent.
The same arguments you're using against the timing of this deadline apply as to why have a trade deadline at all Shiv, goalie injuries and skater injuries that you cannot account for in the playoffs. No one is saying they do no have an effect (No Howard, No Sid round 1 last year's playoffs -> so I get it).

Injuries are standard for NHL teams and BBKL teams. If Sid goes down, it hits the real life Pens just like it does the BBKL Bolts. It's a completely different matter with Goalie Tandems.

Why can't we be constructive?
I liked KyleBOS' idea of an exemption around goalie trades.

I was being serious. If we have a deadline 1 or 2 weeks before our season ends, what's the point? By that time there are likely only 1 or 2 teams fighting for a playoff spot, most of the top teams are already set, and injuries happen regardless of when the deadline is.
I understand the NHL trade deadline being an issue, but that's a risk people have to be willing to take. I acquired the Wild goalies at our deadline knowing full-well Harding is out for now and could see Miller traded there. It's a risk I was willing to take to shed cap moving forward and allow me to get Kessel into my lineup.
We've been trying to find the best solution for goalie injuries post-deadline. That has yet to be decided on.
Having out deadline before the NHL deadline isn't horrible, it's just goalies that are at risk to destroy a BBKL team.
