You almost have to imagine this year was supposed to be the first year of the cap under the new CBA and then it goes up from here based on HRR. I have to think the only reason it was higher last year was because several teams already had guys under contract that didn't allow them to be at the lower cap number...it was basically a grace period. This offseason gave everyone time to get down to a lower number.
It's crazy to think we lost 1/2 year of hockey because of the 'cap' only for it to get straight back up to 70 mil next year.

Seems like a lot of wasted profit/revenue on the NHL's part.

seems like it, but a 50/50 split was needed for survival. I don't think phx or njd would have sold without it.

It's not like this league didn't make enough money. It seems like we're at the point where they want to keep teams from finding ways to skirt the rules...like the back-diving deals prior to this CBA. We'll see about this CBA and what rules teams will dance around. Ownership situations have been stabilized in Phoenix and New Jersey. I don't know what the next issue will be.

they didn't make much. there numbers are all available to see. Of course the PA doesn't believe them but what Union ever believes what management tells them lol.

hopefully there isn't another big issue.

You mentioned the splitting of the pie and yeah, that was an issue for a long time...pre-cap, the PA were paid by nearly 75% of the HRR. That had to be reeled in or the smaller markets would've died. Personally, a smaller league with the stronger markets and a less diluted talent pool would've made this league far more entertaining but Bettman is more about expanding the brand.

^ Very true, Nick...I don't think you see a kid like Seth Jones in hockey without Bettman "growing the game". It takes time for these markets to start producing their own talent. For the longest time, it's been New England, Michigan and Minnesota producing a lot of the talent. It's definitely expanded over time.
