From a pure financial POV (besides going HOME to his own country and familiar surroundings), the tax rate is supposedly 13% (vs. NJ's 45% [federal and state] + the 16-17% escrow (per Elliotte Friedman)) ...

Rumours are that he could be going to a deal with 15+Million/year there, vs. the 77M left on this contract here in the NHL.

Over the next 5 years, he'd make 56M here... say about 26M after escrow and taxes (rudimentary calculation). Say call it an even 30M after some loopholes etc.

In his home country, where he grew up, enjoys being there ... 75M over 5 years ... no escrow... at 13%... ~65M dollars.

Home cooking AND a whopping $35Million more.

Kovalchuk leaving is not surprising when the monetary details are explained. Just a bad way to go about it. You sign a contract, fulfill your duties.

NJ seems to benefit immensely long term from this. I'm sure they didn't fight this too hard... in fact they're letting him go (aka choosing not to fight it). It's a mutual parting of ways. They paid 23M for 3 of his prime years and don't have that contract around for the rest of the century....
