We were a marginal playoff team in the shortened season riding a high PDO and Reimer's amazing play to wins and then we undermine Reimer and bring in an unproven goalie with worse stats on a better team who we will pay more money to and take back 500K in dead cap giving up a serviceable cheap back up goalie and 3rd liner.

We lost MacArthur who put up 62 points in 10-11 when Clarkson had 18 points in 82 games and I don't see Clarkson-Bolland as an upgrade on Grabovski-MacArthur.

Hopefully the extra "toughness" translates to wins since I think subtracting Mac, Grabbo and Frattin and replacing them with Bolland and Clarkson makes us a worse team on paper. I want to be wrong and want the Leafs to win, but I will always look at things critically and I don't like these moves not to mention how much less financial flexibility we have now.

I don't disagree that there are slight upgrades, but this is also a cap system and with the millions extra we spent I was hoping we would be blatantly better not arguably better.

do you really need to use numbers from 3 seasons ago to prove your point?

After hearing that the Leafs didn't even contact Weiss I am pissed. I have defended alot of Nonis moves to date, and given him the benefit of the doubt at every turn, but this is absolute bull shit.

I'm not proving any point. I'm skeptical, disappointed and hope I'm wrong. Also It's only 2 years lol

top4 teams make the playoffs per new...division correct? Boston, Detroit, then the battle royale between MTL/OTT/TOR for 2/3 slots

Assuming TBay doesn't have a crazy revamp in net and D

the leafs future only holds by ONE SINGLE IF:

IF bernier proves all the hype that people think he has been worth all along, we WILL go deep into the playoffs... thats pretty much it. The skaters couldnt possibly do so much worse/better to affect the outcome/statistical results that they were accustomed to producing in their previous years... it pretty much unilaterally depends on Bernier's performance

translation:

Bernier's stats in 2014: 25-40-4-3//4.97 GAA//0.891SV% = leafs bad

Bernier's stats in 2014: 36-18-5-3//2.44 GAA/0.928SV% = leafs good

Top 3, there's a chance for 5th from the other conference to cross over if they have more points I believe.

On the bright side I still like our roster more than MTL and OTT

I bet. Especially with weiss signing @4.9. He is more than .7 better than bozak.

what you need to consider with the bozak deal is that keeping him here likely saves us a few hundred thousand when re-signing phil.

I have considered that and its why i am ok with the grabo thing. I just dont see how phil would suffer playing alongside weiss. I still could honestly see phil pulling a horton next season. This sure helps that though.

Realistically, the Leafs are going to have to make some trades to be cap compliant with all of their impending RFA's. I took a quick guess on the Leafs RFA's (Kadri, Franson, Gunnarsson and Bernier), and included D'Amigo, Holzer and Colborne on a qualifying offer to fill in the empty spots. All of my predictions were on the low end, and even still they push the Leafs cap over the ceiling.
FORWARDS
Joffrey Lupul ($5.250m) / Tyler Bozak ($4.200m) / Phil Kessel ($5.400m)
James Van Riemsdyk ($4.250m) / Nazem Kadri ($3.750m) / David Clarkson ($5.250m)
Joe Colborne ($0.827m) / Dave Bolland ($3.375m) / Nikolai Kulemin ($2.800m)
Jerry D'Amigo ($1.083m) / Jay McClement ($1.500m) / Colton Orr ($0.925m)
Frazer McLaren ($0.700m) /

DEFENSEMEN
Carl Gunnarsson ($3.500m) / Dion Phaneuf ($6.500m)
Jake Gardiner ($1.117m) / Cody Franson ($3.500m)
John-Michael Liles ($3.875m) / Mark Fraser ($1.200m)
Korbinian Holzer ($0.788m) /

GOALTENDERS
Jonathan Bernier ($2.000m)
James Reimer ($1.800m)

OTHER
Buyout: Darcy Tucker ($1.000m)
Buyout: Colby Armstrong ($1.000m)
RETAINED SALARY TRANSACTIONS (0.778% of upper limit)
Matt Frattin ($0.437m—0.5%) Ben Scrivens ($0.062m—0.1%)
------
CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled with the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $66,088,542; BONUSES: $512,500
CAP SPACE (22-man roster):- $1,276,042

Bozak's contract $ is good. Term, would have prefered 3 years but that's just the way it goes.

Clarkson - 7 years is way too long but the cap hit is good.

Weiss - I'm prety annoyed about this. We could have outbid Detroit, unless there was no talking Weiss out of it.

You can't possibly know that.
