CAM wroteCOLONIm usually the same. If i get an inquiry about a player, the person inquiring should do the work of providing a starting point on what they will pay. If that player is not for sale, it is worth the time of both parties to state that up front.
Some guys have used the exact opposite approach, where i'll get a reply "i would rather you tell me you have interest in my player and i tell you what interest(s) me on your roster"

it all depends on the guy i suppose. For me, i dont care, if you come to me and ask what it will take to get a player i'll go look at your roster and tell you, or if you make an offer and i dont like it i'll counter (within reason)

Of course tlusty should have been dealt, indicators were pointing to regression. I'll say the reason I kept him was cap hit vs performance. I was thinking a 50 pt winger, essentially him being gerbe this year in his contract year. It was completely a risk I valued more so than the offers I had for him. That being said I didn't shop him , so my passive approach to the situation hurt me. But the sweet, sweet cap hit.

I'm learning slowing! And for better or worse Wsh is going to be different for next year, missing the playoffs sucks however I think the team is in a better long term (1-3 year window) than it was at the start of the year. I've had 16M. $ in cap hit long term injuries ... So god Damn depth matters; which with some near NHL players coming up (waivers) should be rectified next year.

Side note: can't wait to have my ip unblocked.

Yeah, if I get an inquiry like that with no effort of an offer.. I reply with an absurd overpayment coming back my way.
I offered Hossa before that conversation happened.
Hossa is a respectable starting point for a team fresh off of a cup final and without the goals of the GM evident, would be an excellent piece for a cup run. I guess that is where knowing the GMs future plans is a big help going into negotiations. I dont know the stats but I assume Hossa has way better stats in general but age is the big concern. Kane has power forward all over him and upside. Tough call.

why, because I won't just GIVE you Kane??
me: What do you want for Kane?
you: lots
me: take a look at my team and let me know what you like (link posted)
you: you're the one that wants him.
me: i appreciate the reply..but i asked you to take a look at my team to see what you like. This way I have a better idea of what it would take for me to get Kane. Not sure if there's some misunderstanding. (link posted again)
you: no reply
I hate negotiations like that so I completely get where you are coming from.

Any time someone says "Hey, Shiv - I want Player X from you. What will it take?", I give a straight up answer right away because I feel that the person has made an effort to reach out and to just say something like "Pavelski is untouchable" is not fair at all because every player has a price. Now if my price is too high and the GM decides to take it poorly, then that's on them.

What I've realized is that this is a market of 30 teams. It is finite. I will need to trade with every GM at some point in time and sometimes they will reach out and others I will. It's important to have a give and take. Otherwise, when I actually need help moving a guy to say clear a roster spot because I'm at the contract limit, or cut cap etc., my reluctance to help someone else will only make them more reluctant to help me.

Cliff's a guy that I have great talks with because of this. We make like 10 trades a year and in the process of negotiating those deals, there are low balls thrown out by both parties. But we just LOL and move on. Cliff always says this one line that I love "Had to ask because if I didn't, I wouldn't be doing my job as a GM".

If things hold to form this week...bottom 3 spots in the league: Carolina 179 pts, Vancouver 178 pts, Detroit 176 pts...a 10-4-2 week still doesn't move me out of the cellar and Paul with one win and one tie still stays ahead of Kareem and I.
