Matthew wroteCOLONTerrible draft for me. 4 undrafted guys.
This was my reason why I leaned into taking 2020 guys with my later picks. 8 picks total...all 5 of my 2021 picks were taken so I'd call that a postive.
Haven't had a look at how many of our picks as a group were not taken. Got family commitments this weekend. I'll get to that next week.

Had four 1sts, two 2nds and a 3rd
Walked away with 6 firsts and my 3rd rounder went mid/late 2nd.
Can’t ask for much more at this point

1/32 - Xavier Bourgault 22 to Edmonton (+10)
2/43 - Scott Morrow 40 to Carolina (+3)
2/58 - Benjamin Gaudreau 81 to San Jose (-23)
3/74 - Brett Harrison 85 to Boston (-11)
3/86 - Peter Reynolds Undrafted (-139)
3/87 - Alexei Kolosov 78 to Philadelphia (+9)
4/122 - Ty Gallagher 217 to Boston (-95)
4/127 - Martin Rysavy 197 to Columbus (-70)
5/146 - Fransesco Arcuri 175 to Dallas (-29)
7/218 - Tomas Suchanek Undrafted (-7)
Minus the Peter Reynolds pick this went mostly like I expected with all the uncertainty at the bottom of the draft. Ignoring Reynolds I went -12 in the first 3 rounds with the reach being Gaudreau.

3/4 of my picks were selected, 2 7th rounders, Blake right around on par with NHL selection area. I'd say pretty okay re: where I was selecting from and with what

Lots of red, but only surprise was Canonica going undrafted rather than just dropping.
Best things were where Hughes & Edvinsson landed + NHL teams eventually having to spend a 2nd rounder to draft a guy I got at the end of the draft 2 years ago.
They take some time to figure things out

38 Wyatt Johnson - DAL 23rd +15
42 Mason Lohrei - BOS 58th 2020
166 Jackson Hallum VGK 91st 2020
192 Raivis Ansons PIT 149 2020
224 Cameron Berg NYI 125 +99
Turned Nichushkin into the 23rd overall pick, don't get many 1st round prospects in my system so that was a win. Wasn't a big fan of anyone with my later picks so went the boring route with some undrafted guys who had good D+1 years. Last pick in the draft going 100 spots earlier was a nice way to cap off my draft.

I don't get the obsession with what position your prospect is picked at. Always a possibility a team overvalued the player and took them too early and not every NHL franchise values the prospect the same way. I'm happy just for the guy to be selected and I'm more intrigued by which organization they're a part of it. If they're a defenseman...how many other quality defensemen are they competing with in their organization?

It's really the only concrete measurable we can use. It functionally means nothing, but it's a means to associate a number to gauge performance, I suppose.

Higher picks are afforded more opportunity and even though we think we are experts, teams probably have better scouting than we do other than the Sens.
It's pretty simple, if you took a guy 28th overall and he went undrafted then even if you believe in the player his value just took a huge hit since no other team valued him and his BBKL trade value just tanked. If you take a player 211th overall and he gets drafted 27th overall you have just added a first round pick. When you talk trade with another team you don't refer to the asset as a 211th pick you refer to him as a 1st rounder and he has more value. These are extremes, but you are only going to gain value if picks get taken earlier and only going to lose value if they go later. Your 2nd round pick being taken in the 5th is now a 5th rounder when it comes to trade talk and less valuable.

Shep took Chinakhov in the 6th round in 2019, is anyone going to argue his value didn't go up the night he became a 1st rounder? The player didn't change, but to say draft position doesn't affect value is pretty tough to defend.
Of course a guy taken 190th going 145th doesn't mean much, but players jumping up in the first couple rounds or 7th rounders jumping into the 3rd do help perceived value.

One more example, Boucher went 59th, Duke went 56th. In the NHL they went 10th and 126. I like Duke, I traded into the 2nd round in ADHL to take him 55th. I still think he has a chance to be an NHL player and one year from today after their D+1 seasons Duke could look like the better prospect. Right now Boucher has a lot more value than Duke if he was traded based on draft position in my mind and I think most GMs would agree.
If Boucher was traded for a 2022 2nd today, I think people would think it was a bad trade for the 10th overall pick. I'd take a do over and accept a 2022 2nd for Duke in ADHL if anyone wanted him for that. I also don't think Duke will go before Boucher in any fantasy league draft where they draft after the NHL draft.
