Expect it'll be over the life of the deal but we'll need to wait and see.

I'll still be voting against it, but if it passes it passes. While it's good to mimic the NHL as much as possible, there are some parts we already do not copy.

We'll see how this one plays out.

Its a neat idea, albeit a potentially complex one.

I'm with Shep, as much as we try and mimic the NHL as closely as possible; we don't copy it all. Considering how many GMs have trouble keeping track of something as simple as a draft picks I see trading cap as a potential bookkeeping nightmare.

Lol I just posted about this in a different thread till I realized you guys already had it up here. I'm with Shep - too much to keep track of. If a player retires, no point in keeping him on the books. For salary, it will be near impossible keeping track of that in trades.

I trade Bergeron ($5,000,000) to Kyle for a 2nd round pick. I keep $2,500,000 of the salary. We create an asset on CBS "2,500,000, PBergeron, G Tor". I keep that for the duration of Bergeron's contract.

On my personal spreadsheet I will add $2,500,000 to my team's salary.

I can do this up to three times.

We know you can Mike. So can I, Shep, Steve and many other GMs who are good at keeping track of their assets. That being said there are some here who let's be honest....drop the ball when it comes to keeping track of assets like draft picks. This just gives them one more thing to #%&^ up!

I was following him as a primary source during the lockout, smart and well informed - funny too.

Honestly not hard to implement and track, as long as GMs are reasonable - and if they are not, that the league is.


Also worth noting, these held salaries are not tradable. You split a contract, that is now yours for it's duration. Important note for guys like Shiv that have a tendency to move assets to move assets.

Thankfully the rule also protects GMs with a 15% cap max, 3 contracts max.

- What happens if a player is sent down? put on LTIR? Suspended? Released? Do both teams get cap relief or only his current one?

- What happens if the player is traded again? Can his salary/cap hit then be split over 3 (or more) teams? Is the 50% limit then based on the players original salary/cap hit or the teams share?

- What happens if the player is later bought out?

- Do subsequent waiver claims have any effect on the split?

- If the player has Performance Bonuses, are their cap hits split for the purpose of the Performance Bonus Cushion?

The cap that stays with the team is akin to buying a player out - it's permanent with the team. Remember sending a player down to AHL is no longer cap relief.

A contract can only be portioned out twice. (from 5 -> 2.5 -> 1.25 -> X) Based on new amount of contract (which unless split again is the new contract for all intensive purposes for that player-> it is like they were bought out, and signed a new deal).

No change.

Performance bonus cushion are not part a players annual cap hit calculations, are not not included in the same portion of a contract, so are not part of this equation. (I assume you are referencing Chicago's situation a few years back, in the case that Toews & Kane & Keith had their salaries split when receiving awards or w/e) Of no impact on splitting a players cap hit.

If we do this, I hope everyone is accountable for every penny of their team salary. I'm all for realism and copying the NHL way of business but this only works if everyone keeps good records of their roster and salary.
