It's just other than 2015(Jack Eichel), arguably a player that will eventually becomes better or at least equal than the #2 pick goes within the next couple picks in bbkl. So if u still got a chance if ur picking #5 to get the better player.
2017 - Nolan Patrick -> Petterson, Heiskanen, Makar
2016 - laine -> m tkachuk
2015 - Eichel -> rantanen, marner
2014 - Sam Reinhart -> Draistl
2013 - jon drouin -> Seth Jones, barkov
2012 - Galchenyuk -> Forsberg, Morgan Reilly
Obviously every year is different and byfield could also end up the best player in the draft at a position more valuable than Laf too.
I don't think anyone thinks byfield is bad, but there is a poll on HFBoards between stutzle and byfield, and it has stutzle ahead by just a few votes. So there seems to be a split opinion on those two amongst fans:
https://hfboards.mandatory.com/threads/ ... d.2766312/
Recency bias. Stutzle played on a top DEL team and was the go to guy for Germany.
Byfield carries a putrid Sudbury team and then had a poor world junior. Whiiiiiich isn’t all that surprising given his age and how Hockey Canada handles their very young players who make that squad.
I’d love stutzle too...if I had the 3rd pick
Feel free to explain how Byfield's season was more impressive than Stutzle's considering Stutzle played in a more competitive league. And how exactly was Sudbury putrid? Pretty sure they won their division. If you like Byfield at 2 that's great and all, but in no way should it be a forgone conclusion that he should be the 2nd pick.
Top two scorers after byfield on that team were:
David levin, a 5th year ohl undrafted player with 73 points in 57 games.
Blake Murray, 6th round pick in 2019 with 72 points in 63 games.
Next closest was McCauley Carsen, another undrafted 5th year player with 50 points in 73 games.
And you’re wondering why I say Sudbury is putrid. Byfield is the ONLY reason they finished where they did. Give me a break lmao
Byfield is also one of the youngest players in the draft.
Why you worried anyways. You won’t be drafting either

Also that entire Del team he played on was completely stacked and he played top line minutes both ES and PP. no surprise he put up the offensive numbers that he did

Not arguing your main idea re: Byfield, but that's how CHL works. Outside of top end NHL prospects, the team is carried by 19-20 year olds with no NHL future.

My point is those overagers were complete garbage and didn’t carry anything lol. Byfield carried that team by himself and as one of the youngest draft eligible players in the OHL. Without him they don’t finish anywhere close to where they did. Byfield IS/WAS that team
Would be happy to draft stutzle at 3 btw
We getting sidetracked in this announcing thread again too...whoops!!! Sorry Dave !!!

Just saying it's common that teams that do well have bad players leading them.

See: Toronto when Jason Blake was the leading point getter.

Those awful overagers led nothing which is my point...
It was all byfield all the time.
Don’t bring me that silliness about his bad WJ either. Laf had a similarly poor WJ at the same age (remember byfield is almost a full calendar year younger than him)

Lol ya seems like there is a decent amount of crossover from BBKL and ADHL. I was also apart of the IFFHL previously. Definitely looking forward to the challenge with this roster.
