It's not a different or new style... it dates back to the original 6, it takes speed and skill out of the game...
pussified? Dunno what the relationship is with the 1-3-1...

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy today's game but I think the so called "dead puck" game wasn't nearly as brutal to watch as you guy suggest. Sure, there wasn't as much scoring or open ice but the battles were much better, the play was ten times tougher, and the top lines vs top shutdown pairs was actually meaningful and a fantastic art to watch. It was really a game instead the game! It was just a tougher brand of hockey and tough men were needed to play it! Today's game, 5'5 foot midgets can play and stand a chance, hitting is disappearing along with fighting, and now coaches are being ridiculed for trying to win a game by playing sound positional hockey.
This is what happens when hitting someone could be a 20+ game suspension, coaches look for new ways to beat/shutdown teams. Tight checking and up tempo aggressive forechecking is a thing of the past. When you're afraid to play like that because suspensions are being handed out like Frank insults, why wouldn't you try a safer style, boring or not!
