Make protections to be protections only, and not weapons like it's happened more and more in recent yrs.

That's the main thing. I find unbelievable we came to this point, without the NHL addressing the main problem.

Better helmets and larger rinks would also help obviously.
But the latter would be expensive so i doubt they will go for it. Also, European size rinks are too large, they decrease way too much the intensity of the game. The ideal width would be in between the current NHL and Euro sizes.. take the difference between the 2, add 1/3 of it to the NHL current width and it should get about right.

Hybrid width is ideal, I agree Mik.

Concussion like symptoms.. mean a concussion. The word concussion has gotten such bad press lately no one wants to say that word because it conjures up images of a long layoff. Say concussion like symptoms normally implies its a milder concussion. Its just terminology to avoid directly saying the dreaded C word.

I also agree, change the equipment. Giving a hit should hurt you as well to be honest, it shouldn't be a weaponized shoulder pad your launching into another guys face. Fix that you'll see concussions go down a lot.. Same thing Cherry has been saying for years. Other than helmets etc, not many other changes can be made without lowering the quality of the on ice product.

that's what I said.... it's not a dichotomy ( a yes or no question) ...it's a scale... things that used to be a ' ringer' are now a concussion. Symptoms are different for everyone... fogginess an oft reported condition -> swelling in the occipital lobe? depression -> swelling in the pre-frontal? depending on where in the brain was injured/swelling will change the symptoms...extent and duration obviously impacted by frequency and force...

Its my opinion theres no uniformity in what teams are reporting as "Concussion Like Symptoms" vs "Concussion". I fully understand the differences, but teams aren't reporting them as such. People just want to avoid the word concussion dead stop. They say concussion like symptoms to alleviate the concern a bit.

Stiff neck and a headache can be symptoms of a concussion, or concussion like symptoms; I believe there is a difference, large number of variables at play. Teams are definitely airing on the careful side this season, which is awesome, but i fail to see the mistake teams make by calling something 'concussion like symptoms' before they have a specialist come in to diagnosis it as a 'concussion' (as shown by HBO 24/7 I believe) or ... Nothing wrong with creating a 'scary' stereotype to concussions and to side with individual safety, it's awesome that players don't have to lie about how they're feeling after a big hit.

Doctors don't diagnose a concussion if the patient merely has a headache, or stiff neck, so I'm not entirely sure what you are arguing here...NHL teams do not label a head injury a concussion unless they are reasonably certain it is a concussion. You can make that distinction simply by looking at the amount of time players who have been diagnosed with a concussion miss. It's not 1 or 2 days...

Also, as 24/7 showed, the NHL's concussion protocol was the reason Giroux was taken out of the game, not because the coach was airing on the side of caution.

I've been saying this for years too (not before Cherry tho! lol). The elbow pads and shoulder pads these guys wear are essentially body armour. Next time you are on the ice, take one of those elbow pads with all the hard plastic and smash it against the ice. You can do some pretty good damage. It's no surprise people get so fucked up when they get elbowed in the face.

excellent. This means there is an open roster spot for Gustaffson when he comes back from surgery in a couple weeks.

Berger:

The deal I'm told may have been discussed would land Staal in Toronto for winger Clarke MacArthur and defenseman Luke Schenn.
