Keith Yandle is also retiring.

Subban retiring is a bit of a surprise but not every player wants to play well into their late 30s. Guys like Chara and Thornton are the exceptions to the rule. Some guys just want to keep playing but can't find an NHL gig so they you see a lot of those guys collect checks in Europe.

In my head, the over/under on his AAV was $11 million so good for him on getting paid.

The Avs have a lot of money tied in MacKinnon, Landeskog, Rantanen, Nichushkin and Makar starting next year but they'll have a lot of flexibility with how they want to fill in the rest of that roster. A lot of secondary/support players will be due new deals next summer so having the big ticket figured out first will help in getting the rest of their group slotted in.

I read today that those 5 still make less than TB's top 5 so I don't think it will be too big of an issue if they can find cheap players to surround them which I think is the optimal roster construction.

Man oh man, did I miss big on that draft.

Ryan Ellis is going to be out long-term with a serious injury as well.

Are some of these guys playing through injuries to the point of permanently damaging themselves or are some of these just situations where someone gets hurt in a way that you really can't fully recover.

When it's all said and done, you hope these guys can have a good quality of life if they have to walk away from the game earlier than they would want.
