That doesn't start until he is 30 paying a guy 10.5m from 30-38 could really hurt if he goes downhill by 32-33
But they kinda had to do it

They could have just sucked it up and started the rebuild….all they’ve done is prolong the inevitable.

The Florida-Columbus-Calgary triad is going to be interested to follow but in the end...what did each team accomplish?
Florida got younger and got a better goal scorer in Tkachuk...probably a better long-term investment than Huberdeau when it's all said and done. It can be debated that Tkachuk for Huberdeau is a downgrade overall but Tkachuk plays a rugid style and scores goals...you'd think that helps them in the postseason. Florida needs to make progress in the playoffs.
It cost them one year of Weegar and a 1st (albeit lottery protected and it's in 2025). The way their cap was shaking out...they probably could keep only one out of Weegar and Huberdeau so they make the bold move of getting a young player and at a slightly cheaper AAV.
More or less, Columbus upgrades Bjorkstrand for Gaudreau. Like Tkachuk, he's pricey but he's a (slightly) cheaper AAV than Huberdeau. Issue for the Jackets is they're skilled on the wing but they lack a star-quality center to play with the likes of Gaudreau and Laine. Are they better with Gaudreau? I'd like to think so but if your goal is to get back into the playoffs...the Metro is a pretty deep division right now and do you have the horses to compete in the postseason?
Calgary loses two 100+ point players and gets one back. Huberdeau is capable of scoring 20-30 goals but it's tough to replace two 40-goal scorers. Hard to call Huberdeau an underrated player anymore...probably more has to do with where he played. Since he's entered the league, Huberdeau is a top 20 point producer and he's always been top tier power play performer. The real question is, can you build a team around him? Is he a true center piece or is more of a "Robin" than a "Batman". Calgary won't be able to reproduce the offense they lost from last year but you'd think they're still a playoff team in the Pacific.
If you think about it, Huberdeau basically inherits Lucic's salary slot starting next year. It seems like a better use of that money but what exactly is Calgary? They're fairly old up front...more guys in their late 20s and early 30s. Weegar is an upgrade from Gudbranson. Overall, they have a solid defense plus Markstrom was a top tier goalie last year. They were 6th in the league in goals scored but you lose a total of 52 goals going from Gaudreau/Tkachuk to Huberdeau. Monahan is in a contract year but is 3 years removed from his best offensive seasons. Calgary softens the blow of two big departures but I don't see them being more than a playoff team that might only win a round at best.

When a guy in their late 30s goes over to Europe, usually that's the end of the NHL days. I've stubbornly hung onto some guys that left for Europe and I'll wait a few years to pass before I kick them out the door.
That being said...now that Krejci is back...we're shaping up to have a pretty good waiver draft.

Mario Ferraro just signed with the Sharks at a reasonable cap hit of 3,250,000 per for four years. Now that’s a hell of a deal !!

Heard he's also signed with a team in Switzerland for the year. Probably getting help back home (isn't he from France?) And he gets to play hockey at the same time.

Texier is French...Switzerland shares a border. It's not like there's a French league to speak of.
