Travis Hamonic opts out of returning to play for the health of his family

I wonder how people would feel if a single team like Calgary had 5 good players opt out, where most teams had none, and that team ended up getting crushed and then winning the lotto for Laf.

Am I the only one who is a bit puzzled that a player who is going to play hockey in a city away from their family but could get the virus while "in the bubble"...where in the bubble, there's no family members with the player...how is the family at risk until the player goes home?

I'm not going to bash any player who opts out but the logic behind not playing because another family member is at risk...who won't be in the bubble with said player...what am I missing? Aren't they testing the players? I've not read the entire RTP protocols...if a player gets the virus in Edmonton or Toronto, why would they go home if they tested positive for the virus? Wouldn't the player stay in quarantine until they test negative? You wouldn't go home until after you're symptom-free and test negative?

A personal angle to this, my dad was diagnosed with throat cancer, has gone through treatment (roughly two months of chemo and radiation) and is a few weeks into recovery all during this virus outbreak. He's certainly someone I would think twice about visiting right now. However, if I don't visit him, he's not at risk of getting it if I somehow got it, right? I certainly wouldn't visit him if I showed symptoms nor would I visit him without getting tested first.

So if I was an NHL player who has a vulnerable family member...wouldn't playing in a bubble be safe? Isn't the risk more about the people who are going to be in the bubble? Is there a general fear of getting it and not knowing you have it?

You'd think playing a 60-game season in the MLB traveling city-to-city is far more risky than the two bubble city format. I get the logic behind not playing in that situation more so than the NHL model. And if your team gets eliminated, you're not going to be there as long as other players will.

This wasn't meant to be a mean-spirited take...I want to understand different the points of view. If you were in the position of these NHL players would you participate and if not, why?

Pretty much agree with your take btw.

As I wrote previously, an issue is somehow they agreed to pay to players the playoff bonus no matter if they opt out, which is a joke imho and encourages players not to play. Thinking in particular of players with expiring contracts who did well before the corona stoppage.

Sorry to hear Scott. Opting out might also reflect a player not trusting the league's ability to maintain the bubble, whether that's because of the league itself, the non-league staff or the players. It takes a lot of trust in everyone around you for this to work.

Sure, I bet got to be a lot of trust involved...it's like that whenever you go to work or go to the store. You weigh the odds of something bad happening and you balance that with the trust that those around you being responsible.

It's going to be fascinating to see how behaved everyone can be. To say there's zero risk in any of these situations is false. It's a test of everyone's discipline and how well you respect your teammates as well as those on the other teams. A few careless people can take the entire thing down.

If there's a time to drive home the idea of hockey players being "good guys", it'll come out of this playoff scenario going off with minimal problems.

By the way, my dad is recovering well so far. The positives...his form of cancer is highly treatable, it was detected early and he started treatment as soon as possible. He takes good care of himself and he listened to his doctors and didn't take any unnecessary risks. He has some follow-up appointments in a few weeks to see how he's progressing. His formal treatment ended the week of Father's Day.

I've kept all that quiet because it's a private family matter but I'm more willing to share now since it's going well. It definitely made this spring a bit more complicated.

For these guys, they've got until Monday evening to announce their intention but you wonder how many here planning to do this regardless of the circumstances.

Circling back, I'm not bashing any of them...I'm just curious as to why. You figure players with compromised immune systems or some underlying health problems would be a no-brainer to skip it. The players who would be in direct danger make plenty of sense. Bringing it home to your family, I would hope no player in the bubble is going to do that if they're testing regularly. The safety of the players and staff is at risk if they don't stay on top of it.
