I highly doubt that 9.5x3 rumor was ever a thing. We will never truly 100% know what happened behind closed doors, but what LIKELY happened is something like this:

Leafs wanted to keep the number at 11 max and get term.
Dubas offers 11x8
Marners agent counters with 11x5 under those perameters
They haggle all summer
Eventually both sides compromise a little
Leafs get an extra year and Marner doesn't tax them for that extra year of term

Ultimately Marner wanted to be a Leaf long term.
Ultimately the Leafs wanted Marner around long term.
Everybody comes away satisfied.

Ya but these offer sheets from apparently MIN and CBJ were never going to be a negotiation tactic since they weren't for the amount of $ he was seeking. It was probably like 9M so they were never going to consider it since they would be giving the Leafs a deal.

Friedge reported Marner's camp was offered 3X8 and turned it down so I think there's some truth to it.

I'm done with Marner talk though, I'm not a doom and gloom Leafs fan and still think we are set up well financially with no bad contracts after this season and just need to make smart moves to fill out the roster as their star contracts get more and more favourable as the year pass.

I mean hey anytime you guys want to send Marner the Flyers way, we'll welcome him with open arms haha.

I think they should make Rielly the captain; give Jonny T, Matthews and Marner A's. Easy and likely proper solution if you're not making tavares the captain.

Agreed. 100%. Reilly is the captain the Leafs need. Very much like Mats in the sense that he is a quiet guy that lets his play do the talking for him.
