Marner’s deal is gonna look great vs these guys years 3-6. Guess the question is when are you gonna want the extra cap space

Maybe, though Marner is going to be UFA and Point will still be an RFA. So Tampa could get (as of now) up to 11 years of service out of Point, and the Leafs could only get 6. It's not impossible that Marner leaves - he's already proven that he wants to chase the money.

Point would have to make just over 15M years 4-6 for him to make what Marner is so even though Point might have a higher AAV Marner is still definitely making more over the course of the contract.

Interesting about points deal is that he hasn't structured it so that the 3rd year gives him the most salary, which means his qualifying offer in 4 years is only 6.75m

Some of the other guys on short deals structured it so the qualifying offer would be a significant increase.

True enough. But if that's the case, why overpay your players? Just milk them for what they are going to give you and move on. Let some other team overpay his UFA years.

I get it from a player's perspective, but from a fan's perspective it's frustrating.

Nvm. They've updated capfriendly. His qualifying offer in 3 years is 9m.

I was expecting north of $9m on a long term contract for Point so this makes sense, push back the problem a few years. Continues to be a bargain contract in the meantime :)

Looks like he'll miss the start of the season due to offseason hip surgery though :P

“The Toronto Maple Leafs are aware of the complaint of disturbing the peace against forward Auston Matthews. Auston is cooperating fully with relevant authorities but neither he nor the Club will comment any further..”

Gets paid and all goes to hell lol

Auston Matthews complaint:
"According to the police report, a female security guard at a condo complex in Scottsdale made the complaint after she said Matthews and a group of males tried to open her vehicle as she sat inside doing paperwork at 2 a.m.

The complainant said she got out her car and confronted Matthews, who she said appeared to be intoxicated. She said Matthews said he thought it would be funny to see how she would respond.

The report states that, as Matthews walked away, he dropped his pants, bent over and grabbed his buttocks, though the complainant said he appeared to keep his underwear on.

The report says surveillance video shows a male subject walking toward the complex elevators with his pants around his ankles."

Pretty tame, I realize we live in a hyper sensitive society and I have already seen dumb posts like is it going to cost him the captaincy, but this doesn't seem newsworthy and surprised police even got involved.

Not like both Kanes being accused of rape or Patty beating the shit out of a cab driver over a few cents.

You act like that's a ridiculous idea that he could make that much. 13.5-14m certainly seems realistic. The salary cap is going to look drastically different 3 years from now most likely. And Marner is the superior player for sure.

Or he's proven that he wants a long term commitment from the Leafs. You Leaf fans really need to move on.

I'm happy to have Marner done, but I'd still much rather he signed what Point just got. You can be a big fan of a player, but still not be happy he is overpaid relative his comparables.

Leafs fans that live in the GTA area have been bombarded by media constantly about him all Summer about how things were different now and RFAs were going to get big $ blah blah blah and then Konecny, Point, McAvoy, Werenski, Provorov, Boeser all sign team friendly deals and Rantanen likely signs for less as well. Sure we got some term, but it wasn't 8 years like Eichel/McDavid. You can also throw out the bridge argument, but it was reported Marner wanted 3X9.5 with the final year QO at 15M so once again overpaid relative to his comparables.

Some of those guys weren't eligible to receive offers from other teams, while marner was eligible, and admitted he received some offers that he rejected.
