Does someone know why they don’t just keep his cap on LTIR and use it like normal vs trading away the contract? What’s the limitation that makes moving the contract useful? His salary is only 1M/ya going forward so it’s not like it was expensive.

Rumours that his LTIR wouldn't be approved this year.

You need to be under the cap to begin the season including the players on ltir.

Teams need to be cap compliant at the beginning of the season. That includes the players that will be place on LTIR, and they can only go over the cap in the off-season by 10%. If they want to make any big move (i.e. Faulk), then moving Hossa was probably a priority for them, so that they have the space to add a big-ish contract

Toronto re sign Andreas Johnsson for 1 year x .785m
Bad deal imo. Would have been better to pay him a bit more and lock him up for 3 or 4 years. Maybe 1.4m or 1.7m or something. I'm kinda annoyed as this will cost me cap room over the next few seasons.

U need both sides to agree on a deal... how do you know toronto didn't want to make the deal you are suggesting?
