Why not add a free asset on a short term contract? It makes one of those other 18 wingers more expendable in a trade.

I'm not sure I'd call 3 years a short term contract for a guy who'll be 38 before the season starts

Agreed.

I agree moves are coming, and the only way this deal makes a lick of sense is with other moves. The issue with JVR/Bozak/Marner last year was they were a disaster in their own end. Putting a guy like Marleau on that line helps defensively and it allows the Leafs to package JVR, Carrick and their 1st Rounder for a top 4 dman. Problem is, there isn't much available at all, and I don't think that package gets it done.
