ESPN had laid off LeBrun, Burnside, McDonald and probably letting Buccigross' contract expire in July.

So they just aren't going to cover hockey?

ESPN had a planned talent purge because they waste so much money on TV rights and some guys are criminally overpaid. Sucks for the hockey guys but I'm sure FS1 or NBCSN will swoop in. Maybe even NHLN.

ESPN grossly overpaid for right to NFL, NBA, MLB etc. They're hemorrhaging money with less cable/sat subscribers and they have may too many employees. But the NHL was never going to come back to ESPN. These guys will have a future with another major network

i didn't know espn cover hockey.. NHL is like the last column or like the column i try to find for 5 min before i can find the button to click on.. and then the top news are some old news and definitely non canadian teams involved.

I don't get these deals, like Buffalo paying a 3rd last year for Vesey. Seems like a waste of a good asset, the market should be a 5th or a 6th IMO for a player who aready intended on testing free agency.

Does seem like a lot to give up just to have some time to try to convince them but I'm guessing they can't attract free agents very easily otherwise

How do you figure expansion fall out? It's salary cap problems fall out.

If Carolina can find a way to sign him though I like it a lot for them.
